I sniffled.
“Don’t cry, darling,” she murmured.
“I’m not crying.” I sniffled again and pulled back sharply, turning my head so that she couldn’t see the shameful trail of tears snaking down my cheeks.
She laughed, the sound broken by her own mournful sob. “Yes, you are. You’ve always been a terrible liar, Haile.”
“I am.” I laughed, too; it was hysterical, painful, but it was better than falling into a sea of my own misery. “Stars, I’m a terrible liar. Terrible!”
