Jake heard the strangled snarl and a sudden pop of what sounded like firecrackers just as the line died. Jake realized with a cold chill that it had not been fireworks at all. It had been a firearm. Brian had killed himself reciting the Lord’s prayer hoping that would save him. Jake tossed the phone down and rubbed the bridge of his nose. There was no way to know if it had worked for Brian, and no way to know when they would come for him.

Suddenly, he felt a strange vibration throughout his body and looked up to see unfamiliar words written on the cave wall. With a burst of light, the words disappeared, and he saw the light shoot up to the moon, surrounded by a shimmering dance of stars. He followed the light until he found himself in the maternity ward of Corer Hospital. The light stopped at Ward 119, and he heard the cry of a newborn baby.

Alex secured Damian in the far corner, chaining him to a steel support beam like the animal he was. Only then did we breathe. Alex dropped into the chair across from me, rifle slung loose across his lap. His eyes found mine, searching, anchoring. “We need to know if he’s lying.” I nodded. “I’ll check.” The satellite terminal blinked to life under my fingerprints.
