At the exposure of luxurious tranquillity, thoughts, one by one, began invading my brain; most were filled with hope, and a few with the memories of the past, but none too depressing. I scarcely swallowed a ball of chewed chicken and beans when suddenly an unknown man stormed in, huffing and puffing as if he had been running. His eyes, yellow and glistening, scowled down at me, locking onto my suddenly trembling figure, while his dangerous gaze kept me in place. There, I did not dare move an inch of my body. The unknown man had halted a few feet away from where I sat. I could very well hear his oppressed breathing as his chest heaved; each breath was audibly heavy with restrained danger.

The prince let go of me, and I forced myself to my feet. The throne shadows turned violent. Madness’ crimson eyes swept across the graveyard, raking the thin air, hunting every inch to find me. As I staggered toward the graveyard’s gate, no one turned to look at me. No one noticed me when I walked past them — I was indeed invisible. A thunderous growl rumbled through the dark storm. In search of me, darkness bled into the air, tendrils of shadows lashing and twisting to strangle the winds and capture whatever they might be hiding.

Chapter 1: The Arrival As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows over the dusty road, a weary traveler approached the outskirts of a mysterious city cloaked in mist. The city seemed to materialize out of thin air, its spires reaching towards the heavens like fingers grasping at the sky. Curiosity mingled with apprehension as the traveler made his way through the imposing gates, their iron bars creaking ominously in the evening breeze. He could sense an air of mystery hanging over the city, like a shroud of secrets waiting to be unraveled.

He tried to soothe me. “It wasn’t just a dream!” I snapped. I knew what I saw, and it felt so real. Too real. I didn’t want to ever lose him. Which was why I needed to call Amelia to hear what she had to say about the invisibles. They had been the only threat to the pack, so I was sure the man from my dream had to be one of them. We had to stop them before they could strike, before my nightmare became a reality. He pressed his lip into a thin line and caressed my shoulder. “You—“

And this time, I wasn't going to play by the rules of the draft. I hit the ground. It was dirt. It smelled like rain and oil. I stood up and looked around. I was in a room I didn't know, holding a gun I didn't recognize. A man stepped out from the shadows. "You are early," he said. It was the Publisher. He looked young, healthy, and evil. "We haven't even started chapter one yet." I looked at him and smiled. It was the deadliest smile I had. "Then let's skip to the end," I said.

Like a puppet he stood, posed in an Albert Einstein-ish kind of way without meaning it. So, what should he make of this now, or was he actually meant to make something out of this. "Wait! Then, I settled myself against the trunk, a silent sentinel facing the town square where they would arrive. Drawing on my mana, I wove a cloak of invisibility around my form, muffling my scent, sound, and presence from the world. Time became a slow river. Minutes bled into an hour. Anxious energy thrummed through me, a frantic rhythm against the patient stillness of the oak. Where were they? I stood up. My pacing wore a faint path in the grass before I forced myself into stillness. Then I felt it—not with my eyes or ears, but with my very soul. A sharp, violent tear in the fabric of mana.

The skin of a man who had not hurried through whatever he had just done. He stopped in the middle of the room. He looked at me. And I understood, in the two seconds before he said anything, that the first look was not going to be like the look he had given me when he walked through the door. This one was different. This one had arrived. The first look the one from Chapter One, if I were telling this as a story and not as a life had been the look of a man registering a variable. A noticed thing.
