Looked at me—really looked. “Everything the book gave you that was not yours will fade,” she said softly. “But what was always yours… stays.” I didn’t understand. But I handed it over anyway. The next morning, I woke up and reached between my legs.

“I’m saying I’m ready to take back all the things you took from me. Every single thing.” Including Emily. Even if he didn’t say it out loud, I knew. From his pocket, he took out a little book. “I’m more of a reader, so you know, there’s this interesting thing.” He said, folding a page, and throwing the book to me. I caught it, and opened the book, unfolding the folded page.

I asked myself while returning the picture frames back to the bookshelf. I look in front of me where there is a glossy white center table. And on top of the table is a book turned to page 269 and a black small cup of tea. I picked up the book and read the title, it says, The Time Traveler’s Wife. The cover of the book shows a little girl and a man’s shoes beside her. I returned the book back to its place. A cup of tea and a book, I can imagine an introvert here. And then I touched the tea cup and feel it’s smooth porcelain texture. I smell through the thin white smoke that comes from the cup, which the scorch earthly smell burnt my nostrils.

Inside the Archive, the shelves moved with my breath. I passed by a book bound in velvet dusk. Its title: The First Time You Chose Softness Over Safety. Another: How You Loved When No One Was Looking. I reached for a third. It burned with light before revealing its name: What You Became When You Stopped Trying to Be Understood. I wept then—not from pain, but from reunion. The guide touched my shoulder. “There’s one more,” they said. They led me to a door I hadn’t noticed.

The book smelled of old paper and safer times when I didn't have to worry about anything but my fantasies. “I haven’t seen this book in years,” I whispered. “I thought I lost it during the burning.” “You almost did,” Elaris said quietly. “But I went back for it. I knew you’d need it someday… a reminder of who you were before everything turned upside down.” My throat tightened. “Before I became… this.” She nudged my shoulder. “You’re still you, Kaelis. Just… updated. Like a stronger version with trauma added.” I snorted. “That’s not comforting.”
