I caught my hand beneath her chin while the other beat gently against her back, over and over, until the coughing started to ease. “Easy, easy—breathe, McKenna. I've got you. Breathe,” I muttered, rubbing her back. I felt something warm spread against my palm as she coughed, but I was too focused on getting her through the fit and didn't think much of it. I coughed again, harder this time, and more blood poured from my mouth. "No, no, no," I heard my dad's voice, panicked and desperate. My hand flew to cover my mouth, but the coughing didn't stop. I dragged myself to the bathroom and locked the door. I slid down the door and leaned against it. I looked at the crimson liquid that splattered on my palms. My breathing was shallow, and my pulse was weak. What was that for? A momentary moment of victory? Yes. It felt good.

"She actually asked if we accepted future blessings as payment.” I laughed even harder until the laughter caught in my throat. A cough escaped me. Then another. Within seconds, I couldn't stop. My chest tightened painfully as violent coughs tore through me one after another. I quickly grabbed the towel resting beside me and pressed it against my mouth. The coughing refused to stop. My lungs burned. Each breath became harder than the last. When it finally eased, I glanced down. A thin streak of crimson stained the white towel. My heart stopped.

We were together in the room, and suddenly she started coughing. I ran to get crushed ginger and garlic with herbs but she threw it at me, giving me a stern look, she continued coughing. While I watched, my reflection wavered— Then I coughed. Oh goddess! I coughed again and more blood sputtered. My hands were shaking so hard I could barely turn the water to wash it away. The metallic taste filled my mouth, choking me. This was it? This was the mark killing me from the inside. My hands were shaking so badly I nearly fumbled the tap before forcing it open. Water rushed over the porcelain, thinning the dark red, but the metallic taste still clung to the back of my throat.

He nodded, trying to get her to believe that everything was going on in fine for him. "You fucking coughed out blood, how on earth can you say you are fine?!" She couldn't believe her ears. He must have thought she was such a fool. "Alright." Cole sighed and sunk further into his seat. He framed his head in her direction and sighed a second time. "I have hemoptysis."
