Hoping to keep him talking, I decide to ask another question that I really do want to hear the answer to.
“What about your speech, that there’s a criminal here,” I ask him, trying to appeal to reason, “What are you going to tell your guests that I stole? You can’t tell them about the jewels. So what did I take?” ”
“Oh, that,” he says, with a terrible grin, “I’m telling my guests that you stole my Renoir. I interrogated you both, but you escaped together before I could turn you over to the police. You will never be seen or heard from again. Pity, really. My guests liked you before all of this.”
