Blade let out a sigh of relief and came to my side, starting to inspect me. "Are you feeling okay? Is it hurting anywhere?" He asked as he lightly touched my head. I gave him a small nod, clearing my throat before replying. "I'm okay...just that my head hurts a little..." I murmur. Blade let out another sigh of relief as Caspian looked at us with disdain, glaring at me particularly. "Don't worry, you'll be okay soon." Blade reassured me as he gently moved his hand over my wound, the pain immediately vanishing under his quietly spoken spell.

The blade appeared—sleek, glowing, alive in her hands. “BOOMERANG!” She flung it. FWWWWSSH! The blade spun through the air like death incarnate. THUNK! A head flew. SHNK! A guard fell in half. WHAM!—a leg here, an arm there. The blade carved carnage into the steps. Blood splattered, mixing with ash. Thud. Splat. Crack. She called the blade back. Whiiiiing—CLAP! It landed in her grip, humming.

I’m not sure when I send the blade flying, but in one second my hand is empty. I vaguely hear the sound of metal cutting through the air. In the next second, It slices through candlelight, haze and history. Then— Impact. Not the clean, hollow plunge I rehearsed a hundred times in my head. There’s resistance. A sickening scrape. Metal meeting flesh, then bone. A sharp, strangled inhale. The blade does not sink where it should.

A sharp whooshing sound rushed past my ear before I could react. The object flew toward me and shot past my face, the sudden force of it making my hair whip slightly across my cheek. The jacket was instantly pinned against the pine tree behind me. The blade had gone straight through the thick fabric and buried itself deep into the bark with a heavy thud. A soft gasp escaped from me before I could stop it. My hand instinctively flew to my chest as my heart slammed violently against my ribs. The cold realization settled in immediately. He had thrown it without even seeing me.

I asked. “I will,” Arayen rumbled. “But this is your battle to lead. Show them why you were chosen.” I raised the Blade of Veyra. Its edge burned like a fallen star. Then I ran. Straight into the chaos. They swarmed—dozens of them. Too fast. Too hungry. But I didn’t slow. I swung the blade, and it sang. Where it cut, the shadows disintegrated. I ducked under one wolf’s pounce and drove the blade straight through its heart. It vanished in a burst of black mist, screaming as it went.

"For ten million, deposited into an account of your choosing. The transaction is instantaneous." I didn't hesitate. I couldn't afford to. I grabbed the blade. It felt unnaturally heavy, as if it were forged from the gravity of a dying star. I didn't think about the pain; I thought about the freedom. I positioned the tip against the corner of my left eye. I took a ragged, shuddering breath, closed my eyes for a fraction of a second, and thrust the blade forward.

The blade tilted toward Zara. I stepped in front of her without thinking. “Don’t,” I snarled. Voss’s lips curved. “Fascinating. It recognizes hierarchy already.” The blade lunged. It didn’t aim for my heart. It went for my bond. Pain exploded through me, white, searing, intimate. The blade skimmed my chest, carving a sigil into my skin that burned straight through flesh and into spirit. I hit the floor hard, the world shattering into sparks and echoes.
