“They look happy, don’t they?”
Emily only nodded. The sight of Nancy leaning into Charles’s shoulder, his hand resting on hers… it was a living tableau of the bond she’d once hoped could be hers.
Justin smiled, guiding her toward a quieter spot behind a cluster of pines. They sat on a low stone wall, the fairway stretching out before them, the air cool and fragrant with afternoon dew.
“Charles is my old buddy,” Justin began, picking at a blade of grass. “He was already famous, of course… rich, charismatic, the kind of guy who had the world at his feet. But after his parents died, everything changed.”
