"We have our two survivors. Now open the fucking doors and bring us up. The real game is just beginning." For ten long, agonising seconds, there was nothing but the roar of the water. Then, a massive, grinding mechanical screech shook the cavern. At the far end of the basin, a heavy steel platform began to slowly descend from the ceiling. It was a freight elevator designed to extract the victors. I turned my back on the camera. I waded through the water toward the descending lift. Behind me, Sloane pushed herself up. She clutched her bleeding hand to her chest and followed her queen out of the dark without a single word of protest.

Brody had someone translate it. "Water pressure exceeds projections... Frame showing deformation... I'm aborting descent... I repeat, aborting descent! Returning to surface..." Then came a dull, muffled crack, like something being crushed under immense force. After that, there was silence. All three teams were gone. Not one of them had even laid eyes on the target submersible. At 2 AM, Brody shot out of his chair. "Maren, look at this." He turned his phone screen toward me. It was a live satellite feed. Griffin's support vessel was moving toward the target zone.

Crumbled walls all over the land, gigantic stone highways sliced the city, buried beneath vines. It looked abandoned. But somehow... Not empty. I didn’t even know how to explain it, the feeling made me anxious. I felt like the city was watching us. Waiting. Matthew broke the silence first. "We move." No one argued. We packed up all of our supplies and started descending. The whole descent process took close to two hours. The ground was rough, requiring that we be extremely careful while navigating through loose rocks and roots. As we came closer to it, the remains only grew bigger.

“Sweep elements are already angling to cut the northern exit of this system. We have minutes, not an hour.” The column pushed harder. They cleared the last narrow section of the ravine as the first Continuity boots reached the southern entry point behind them. The walls shallowed. Light increased. The descending northern slope opened ahead—long, uneven, and almost entirely without overhead cover for the first four hundred meters. Beyond it the darker band of older timber waited like a promise that might already be too far. A drone engine note dropped into a descent profile the moment the column emerged onto the slope.

“No. Just angry.” They moved at dusk. The descent was perilous—through icy rock trails, overgrown mine shafts, and half-collapsed tunnels that hadn’t been touched in decades. Eden’s legs burned with every step, her breath fogging as she crouched beside a rusted grate embedded in the earth. “This is the entrance point,” Roman said, prying open the ancient vent. Cold air rushed from the opening, and the sound of distant machinery echoed upward. “No cameras. Probably thought the cliffs were defense enough.”
