The Descent: Part 2 Review Novels & Stories

Idris's POV The descent is not something I will describe without flinching, even now. I have been through the tunnel once already, when I came up through it to find Ronan and the others, and the memory of the first time did not prepare me for the second. The darkness in it is complete, the kind of dark that does not adjust to, that presses against your eyes with physical weight. The tunnel narrows without warning and widens without pattern, and the sounds of the battle above fade within the first thirty seconds until there is nothing but the breathing of the wolves behind me and the sound of my own footsteps on ancient stone.

[The Descent] The balcony groaned, a sharp, metallic shriek that vibrated through the soles of my feet. Below us, the Atlantic was a churning cauldron of white foam and jagged black rocks, hungry for the secrets we carried. Dante stood at the very precipice, his coat billowing like the wings of a fallen angel. He looked at me—truly looked at me—without the mask of the Architect or the armor of a Mafia king.

The descent was not a fall it was a controlled surrender. The emergency lift screamed as it dropped through the collapsing shaft, cables snapping above them like gunfire. Dust and debris rained down in choking waves, sparks flashing like dying stars in the dark. Jessica braced herself over Romeo, one arm around his shoulders, the other gripping the rail with white-knuckled desperation. Miguel stood planted beside her, jaw clenched, blood streaking his temple as he fought the violent sway of the lift. Claire crouched low, fingers pressed to the metal floor, whispering something under her breath prayer or memory, no and could tell.

She rocked her head back and forth, her whole body one tight cord of pleasure as her screams filled the room. As soon as it was over, she collapsed back onto the floor, her chest rising and falling with her heavy breathing. As she glanced over at the recliners, she noticed Damien smirking at her while Nick merely leered. The look on his face, however, made her shudder again, the fire still burning between her legs.

“There’s a secondary exit — northwest quadrant, ground level. Service lift. Avion’s confirming.” “Distance?” I demanded between breaths. “Approximately twenty meters below you,” Avion replied quickly. “Direct descent is risky but viable.” Twenty meters. With unstable flooring. Two armed operatives. And a sniper-level gunman closing in. My muscles burned. My shoulder throbbed from the strain of catching Tristan. My thighs trembled from maintaining balance on the tilting structure. But my mind remained razor sharp. “Pathing?” I asked. “There’s a vertical support ladder five meters to your left,” Avion said. “Partial cover from the beam network. But you’ll cross two potential sensor plates.”

the smart core said, and the basket tilted again, creaking like old bones under pressure. Colt slammed down hard against the override switch with his fist this time, and sparks flew, the screen flickering like old television before prime time came on. “Altitude dipping. Initiating emergency descent,” Smart core said, and Colt swore. “No you don’t, you shit,” then he yanked the auxiliary lever as I wondered where exactly we were and would descend to. The basket finally steadied, the flames burning again at a normal rate, and my head fell onto his shoulder.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐙𝐨𝐧𝐞 The iron grate clattered shut above them with the sound echoing like a gunshot through the narrow brick shaft. Maya fell through the darkness, her stomach lurching as gravity briefly took hold, until her boots hit a layer of cold, stagnant water with a heavy splash.

I ended up marrying Christopher, the man Dad introduced me to, and a year later, we had twins—a boy and a girl. When the kids turned three, I returned to my home country with Mom and Dad. Stepping back onto familiar ground, I felt different. The last time I had left, I'd had nothing but scars and a deep sense of helplessness. Now, everything had changed. I had loving parents, a devoted husband, and two beautiful children. I had the purest love in the world and everything I had ever dreamed of.
