I help her lift it up, and that is when we see the book that is just sitting there in the sand. I hear Nova's breathing seize. “What's that?” She asks, her voice barely above a whisper. I look around one more time, making sure that we aren't being watched, as I pull the book out of the sand, dusting off the cover. There isn't a name. As I open the book and flip through the pages, they are slightly damp, with almost all the pages empty. I get to the middle, and that is when I see the first drop of ink in the book. The handwriting is more or less scribbling, but I can clearly read everything.

With a gentle pull, Joseph selected a dusty tome, feeling the weight of its untold stories in his hands. The book, like a relic from a bygone era, held the promise of forgotten wisdom. Before delving into its contents, Joseph decided to liberate it from its dusty shroud. A well placed exhale expelled a cloud of dust, and, in response, Joseph couldn't stifle a sneeze that reverberated through the room. "Oh my, it's so dusty, probably never been cleaned," he muttered to himself, a wry smile playing on his lips. The intentional neglect of this corner was a deliberate choice, a testament to the charm of the untouched and the allure of secrets waiting to be unraveled.

If she heard me, she ignored it and went about picking out more books while humming. I flipped the book open and blew away the dust settled on its leaves. The book was so fragile that it was barely in one piece. The dust settled and instead of words, I saw an empty page. I was perplexed at first. I quickly flipped other pages and they were like the rest. “It's empty,” I blurted. She ignored me and continued humming her ominous tune. “Nadia,” I called out impatiently. “There are no words in here.” I picked out another one and flipped through it, ignoring the dust particles flitting through the air. It was as empty as the first. I hurriedly checked the rest and it was the same thing.

She opened the note in it and read “a cup every evening before bed. 3 days only.” Now she had her trophy, and two options, the vast land in front of her and the noise behind her. She already knew escape was not an option because she could see that the fences were still very much holding, and very much high. Escape was nowhere in sight but her wolf, she itched. “You can't be serious.” She said out loud. “Now, you wanna come alive, Snow girl?” But she kept moving. She got to the third creek and then she heard the noise, much louder than what she had left behind her, and much stranger too.

She said. *********** Daniel and Sonia, as well as Valery were in the living room, seemingly having an argument. Suddenly, Valery threw a few shades of dirt at Sonia, in an attempt to initiate a fight, right in the presence of Daniel. Sonia flicked her clothes as if she wanted to get rid of the dirt from Valery and said calmly, "Miss Valery, calm down. You are pregnant right now. If you have a miscarriage, you will never be able to step foot in this world for the rest of your life."

He hissed but I shook my head. “Is that really how you want it to end though?” I twisted my lips. “Such a tragic conclusion to an even more pathetic life that you lived” I spat in his face, watching as his eye brows twitched with anger. Then a footstep thud echoed from above us. Almost instantly, Diablo froze.

You think your little bookstore is the center of the universe? Grow up. The world doesn’t stop for rose bushes and storytime.”

My thumb hovered right over the play button. The tiny red light kept blinking, warning me the battery was about to die. My heart was thumping so hard against my ribs it felt like it was going to burst. "Come on," I whispered to myself, my voice shaking in the quiet room. "Just press it." I looked down at the old leather book on the floor, then back at the recorder. If my dad was on this tape, I needed to hear him before the battery gave out completely. I swallowed the copper taste of blood in my mouth and hit play.
