He followed without being invited, he never waited for invitations, I dug through my makeup bag with hands that wouldn't cooperate, pulled out the test, and held it toward him without letting go. Screen facing out. Like the distance would help somehow. He looked at it for three seconds. Didn't flinch. Didn't curse. Didn't do any of the things a normal person does when their entire future rearranges itself on a digital screen. Then he said: "Plural."

Nezeira felt the restlessness and said, "Is there something bothering you princess?" Euphenia, "Ohhhhh, actually I do have a question." Nezeira looked at her and said, "Please ask." Euphenia, "I have heard about Your Highness many times. Especially about your eyes. But….." Nezeira, "I wear black contacts. Trying not to draw too much attention." Euphenia gleamed and replied, "No wonder!" Nezeira, "So, what do have to share regarding these Beasts?"

I fumbled in my robe pocket, pulling out the small white box, my fingers trembling as I opened it to show him the test. He didn’t look at it immediately. His gaze remained locked on my face, drinking in the truth reflected in my eyes, my tears, my smile. When his gaze finally dropped to the test in my shaking hand, a fresh tremor ran through him. He stared at the test results in his hands and adjusted the glasses on the bridge of his nose. “From my observation, there’s nothing wrong with Ms. Hamilton’s eyes.” There was dead silence in the room…

She said. Her words hit somewhere deep, and I hated how much I needed them. I managed a weak smile. “I hope so.” Dr. Morgan stood, nodding toward the door. “Let’s take you to the exam room. We’ll begin with a visual field test, then dilate your eyes for a closer look. We’ll talk more after.” I pushed myself up, legs heavy as if I were walking toward a verdict. Anthony Cruz, I reminded myself. Not Vale. Cruz. Just a name, a mask, a shadow.

Alex stared straight into his eyes to determine if he was lying by using his Third Eye. Under regular circumstances, the Third Eye was capable of detecting abnormalities when a person lied. However, some people were very capable and might be able to fool the Third Eye. It was almost like a polygraph. Polygraphs might make mistakes sometimes.
