The words erupted from my chest in an intense, predatory roar. But her scent had vanished. Rain began to pour, interfering with any chance of tracking her trail. When I caught the smell of danger nearby, my fur bristled. I closed my eyes and heightened my Lupine instincts. There were rogue wolves lurking within the forest. More than that—there was a dangerous creature, one of Nocturnus’s lackeys, his guardian who hunted whenever his master unleashed him: a three-headed Cerberus, better known among humans as a hellhound.

The K-9s that were part of the detail were hellhounds and were bred specifically to serve the Moon Goddess and her chosen Elders. As the guards walked them away from the Elders, the dogs shifted to their hellhound forms. Each of the three dogs stood with their heads held high, even with shoulders of their Lycan handlers. Their pitch-black fur stood on end making them appear even larger. The eerie and demonic red glow of their eyes refracted off the smoke that came from their large snouts and mouths that held a permanent snarl. Fangs and claws extended as foam began to form around their mouths as they drooled in anticipation of a fight.

It was the howl of a hellhound on the trail of its prey. “That son of a bitch.” Hel stood up and rotated her shoulders. “Fine, I’m in the mood to kill something.” She glanced down at Serenity. ‘Jor you better get your ass back here. She is fading and I just heard a hellhound. I’m sure it’s headed this way.’ She commentedmentally and her senses flared. They were coming toward the front of the house, she felt demons and just the one hellhound. Farther out she felt a couple vampires and then Surt himself. Well shit, she relayed that information as well.

My jaw drops. In front of me stands a massive ember wolf with four heads—that’s right, four heads each with razor-sharp teeth. Fire rippling through her fur. She takes off, tearing the two witches apart without even stopping. She is in front of her beta in a flash and shreds the witch within seconds. Her beta shifts into a deep black wolf with fire-red eyes and black smoke coming off of her. Andricia lifts all four snouts to the sky and lets out a howl. Instantly, every pack member of hers shifts into the same black wolf, with black smoke trickling off of them. Hellhounds—they are a pack of hellhounds. They all rip the witches apart quickly, and the witches start to retreat.

Thea thought the occupants of this place must know shortcuts between levels using those ever-spinning, ever-changing tunnels. Her Valkyries closed in on her and Conri, forming a protective circle around them. Another row of them spread out, poised to fight. The rest of them fanned out around them, also ready to fight. A few of the dark figures stepped out of the shadowy darkness and got close enough for her to see. Suddenly, she understood the term hellhound. Dead werewolves in wolf form, shadow demons animating them. It made her hair stand on end. Other things stepped out of the shadows. Something that looked like a monster made of rock and dripping mud. Everything else basically sat in the middle of the spectrum. I brought the rim to my lips and tipped the contents back. The blood washed over my taste buds which had an immediate groan of pleasure sounding through the room. Hellhound blood was the most unique type of blood I had ever tasted. It offered sweet notes when it lingered on the tongue but instantly shifted to a burning sensation when it hit the back of my throat and entered my stomach. A Hellhound was essentially made of fire, hence, their blood carried the burning attribute of fire. It was similar to alcohol, except, it didn't intoxicate me.
