Please listen to me, okay? It's not what you think…" Marcus kept wiping my tears away in a fit of panic, but he could never stem my tears no matter how much he wiped. NARRATIVE POV The flames consumed the old cabin, and the smoke filled the forest. Frankie watched from a safe distance away, watching as the fire started to tear down and burned to ruin her final resting place. Who had set the fire? She wasn’t sure, but her three wolves flanked her sides and ensured that no one detected their presence. Frankie hadn’t awoken yet. She was still hollowed and adapting to being physically on earth again. The burning flames flickered over the gloss of her blackened eyes. Her face held no emotion. She watched with a curious emptiness, but could not turn away.

Sally had not managed to ask her questions before Elijah’s car pulled to a stop outside the cafe. The tall man pushed the cafe’s glass doors open and strode over to them. He glanced lovingly at Sally and asked, “Do you need me to wait for you guys?” “No need.” Franklin stood up calmly. “I just remembered I have something to tell Thomas. I’ll be leaving now.” After he finished speaking, he turned and strode away. When he noticed that Sally was still sitting dazedly in her seat, Elijah smiled and sat down where Franklin had been sitting before as he elegantly poured Sally a glass of lemon-infused water. “What can’t you make sense of?”

Franklin replied ominously. The door to the house we needed to check out was locked so Franklin kneeled down in front of it and started trying to pick the lock. He could have broken down the door much quicker but we didn’t need the kind of attention that would bring down upon us. As he worked I watched the street for any signs of people heading our way, until my curiosity got the better of me. “Can you just spit it out, this whole cryptic vampire thing really doesn’t do it for me.”

“All you’ve got to do is decide after a while. But it won’t always be like this. I promise.” We drove another ten minutes before we pulled into the driveway of a massive house, then I saw eyes in the distance. Glowing. Frankie put the car in park and shut it off, turning to me. “When you get out, do not move and don’t let him smell your fear.” I laughed, “What are you talking about?” He smiled, “Wait for me.” He got out of the car, and I watched as the eyes got closer, slowly. I was starting to get scared. I wasn’t at first, not until Frankie said something. I jumped when he opened the door, “Come on, time to meet Maximus. We call him Max, though.”

I turned around to come face-to-face with a guy wearing a rogue costume, a pirate hat, a hook for a hand and eye patch on his left eye. “You are Franklin? Right?” I asked out of the blue. I could recognize those blue eyes from him anywhere. The man chuckled as he took a quick bow before me. “Yes, that is I. Our paths have crossed again I suppose,” he chuckles. “You look beautiful, Miss Clara.” I started to choke inside trying to stop myself from coughing because there might be something that could come out. “Are you alright, Miss Clara? Y-your cheeks... they are red!” Franklin exclaimed, making me cover my face.

He smiled and I caught a glimpse of gold in his mouth. ‘You must be his hyna?’, his voice resembled, one of a frog. ‘I didn’t know spitfire was already into melanin sugars like you’, he said and I had totally lost my will to speak. He was walking closer to me and had a sneer fixed on his face. ‘The best way to get a guy is through his hyna’, he chuckled and I swallowed so hard my throat ached. Umm where was Beck, this dude was going to kill me I had closed my eyes in prayer of forgiveness when I heard a gunshot and a groan, then a loud thud.

Like something else was wearing his face. Emily shivers. “I… I saw him too.” Everyone turns to her. She hugs her arms around herself. “When I was in the basement. Before I escaped. I thought I imagined it, but… I saw a man hiding in the shadows. Older. Same eyes as you, Raven.” My breath catches. Noah curses under his breath, pulling me tighter against him. “Okay. That’s enough. We’re not talking about this until we’re home and safe.” Grace nods quickly. “Agreed.”

Julian shot him a look. A very specific look. The kind that clearly translated to keep talking and I'll leave you in the woods. Frank ignored it completely. “Don't look at me like that.” He raised both hands in surrender. “I'm simply reporting facts.” His grin widened. “Objectively speaking, the drive out here was one of the most embarrassing experiences of my life, because every ten minutes this man would refresh Evelyn's I*******m story, stare at it like it contained classified government intelligence, and then immediately ask me whether a woman posting a campfire photo meant she was cold.”

" Hannah screamed and spotted Ava who was hiding among the crowd at a glance. Ava kept her head lowered and looked as frantic as she was. The moment their eyes met, Ava could clearly feel the murderous glint in her mother's eyes and shuddered. Franklin came over. He had heard the ruckus that happened over here, and someone had told him everything that unfolded. Living to this age, Franklin had long mastered the skill of masking his emotions. However, there was a storm in the bottom of his unfazed eyes, and his silence was only the quiet before the storm. "Hannah Johnson, Ava Baker." Franklin's voice startled the two women like a hammer. "Explain this!"
