I waited until the house went quiet. Then I went to my room. I locked the door and pulled out my phone. The investigator I'd put on John was a sharp guy, ex-military with a knack for digging up dirt no one else could touch. I hit dial, pacing the thick carpet as it rang. He answered on the second ring. “You got something for me?” I asked. “Yes,” my guy said. His voice was steady, but there was an edge to it now. “And you were right to ask me to investigate John.”

He had to play this smart though he told himself. “Is everything ok?” asked the investigator. “Yes everything is fine. I have a meeting with an important investor I forgot about Can I call you later today to finish this up?” The investigator looked annoyed, but knew Inigo was paying him handsomely to give him the information so he couldn’t be too upset with him. “Yes Sir , that’s not a problem.” “Good.” Inigo said as he shook the man’s hand and immediately walked out the front of the building. He took the keys to his mercedes from his trusted bodyguard Stanly.

The lead investigator stepped forward. A woman in a dark suit. Sharp eyes. Serious expression. She quickly surveyed the room. The monitors. The files. The evidence. Then her gaze settled on Richard. “Richard Hale?” Richard nodded. “Yes.” “You contacted us.” “I did.” The investigator looked around again. Then toward the Director. “Sir, I’ll need you to come with us.” The Director smiled faintly. “You finally found enough evidence.” “Yes.” The answer came immediately. No hesitation. No sympathy.

The lead investigator, who had been standing near the door, slowly walked back to the table and took the seat opposite him. A faint smile crossed his face. "That's good to hear," he replied calmly. "Because we were already preparing to conclude this part of the investigation." The tattooed man frowned. "What do you mean?" The investigator folded his hands together. "Donatus Richardson has already made it clear that he doesn't know you." The tattooed man's eyes widened. "What?" The investigator continued in the same calm tone. "He said you acted on your own. He claimed you were your own boss."

They saw my patience and kindness and assumed I was naïve. Soon enough, they would discover just how wrong they were. Just then, my phone rang. The caller ID belonged to the investigator I had hired to dig deeper into Liam's past. Unlike the others, this investigator was one of the best in the business. He had uncovered secrets from competitors who had buried their scandals so deeply that nobody believed they existed. If anyone could find answers, it was him. "Ma'am, we have everything you requested." A slow smile spread across my lips. "Really?" I asked, leaning back comfortably in my chair.

Legitimate. Or so I had thought. "They’re involved in real estate, power, fashion, hospitals, automobiles, construction..." The investigator’s voice was steady, but then he hesitated for a fraction of a second before adding, "And law enforcement." The moment those words left his mouth, a chill ran through me. “I really can’t do anything with you. Don’t worry. I’ll help you find him.” Sarah smiled and nodded. Melvin still had matters to deal with at the old residence, so Sarah drove away. But she did not go home. Instead, she went to meet the private investigator. “Ms. Sanders, what would you like me to investigate this time?” The investigator wore a dark baseball cap, and half his face was covered by a black mask, leaving only a pair of sharp eyes exposed. Sarah glanced at him, picked up the air conditioner remote beside her, and lowered the temperature a little.
