Then said something that made my blood run cold. "The last human with that kind of power nearly ended the world five hundred years ago." We all heard the story growing up. The big bad shadow wolf. There was only one person that could be. "The Shadow Wolf," I whispered. The old man nodded. Slowly. My pulse quickened. "So do you have the book?" Instead of answering, the old man disappeared into the maze of shelves. I stood there waiting. And waiting. And waiting. Long enough that I began wondering if he had simply wandered off and forgotten I existed.

He showed me the page of a book with a picture of humans with spears attacking creatures who were half-human and half-wolf. “Eventually,” he took the book back to flip through it again, “werewolves fought back and gradually took control of our society.” He showed me another page, this one with a picture of a werewolf stepping on a human’s neck and confiscating their spears. I barely took in the image before he snapped the book shut and handed it to me. I took it, reading the title: The Hidden History: The Werewolf-Human War Through The Great Claiming. “What’s The Great Claiming?” I asked.

Some promises outlive the species that made them. 3.
