The irony was painful, I was here to spy on him, to gather information for the syndicate, and now I’d be sitting next to him at dinner, pretending everything was normal. As evening fell, the mansion came alive with activity. Luxury cars began arriving, and packed in the garage. Five men stepped out, each one exuding power. Gerrard greeted them personally, leading them to the Library, a part of the house reserved for his most secret dealings. It was heavily guarded, soundproofed, and off-limits to almost everyone.

“He… he said he wanted to play chess with me. Thank God you got here in time! I was beginning to think he was… not being a gentleman.” I heard a low growl coming from Hunter’s chest and I couldn’t help smiling to myself. Mrs. Devlin shook her head. “Library is two floors down. Hurry. Visitors that are not family are not allowed here.” And then she left. I laughed as soon as she was gone. “What did you say to her?” Hunter asked. The tone in his voice told me I was in trouble. “I was not being a gentleman?” I laughed. “Come on, Hunter. I was joking.”

“Kindly wait here.” I turned my head to look at Adrian, noticing the sudden tightness around his jawline and the way his knuckles clamped against his pockets. “I can handle an old man,” I whispered to him, my voice carrying a sharp edge. “He isn’t just an old man,” Adrian said, his voice dropping so low the coordinator couldn’t hear. “Don’t let him back you into a corner, Meghan.” I didn’t answer him. I walked past the gray suit and pushed the heavy, dark wood doors open, stepping into a library lined with thousands of leather books that stretched all the way to the high ceiling.

I gently knocked, waited until a voice came from the other side before I pushed opened the door. I walked in to meet a masculine man standing, his glasses hung low with a book in his hand. The entire room was decorated with wooden shelves and each was filled up with books, which make me conclude that this is a library. “What brought you here?” He asked without even turning to look at who it is. I cleared my throat, feeling the itchiness more. “I am Inez.” I introduced although he didn’t ask for it. “I know.” He curtly responded.

“Thanks for meeting us, Greg,” I shake the hand of Crystal Lake’s lead guard. He’s an intimidating guy with light blue eyes and a buzz cut. His long sleeve shirt is an attempt to look professional, but he can’t hide the tattoos on his oversized hands and thick neck. “Anytime, Marshall. The human library is an odd choice, but I get it. Neutral ground, like you were saying.” He shrugs and looks around. Behind him, a mother is ushering her child, who is pointing at Greg, into the library. “I’m glad to hear you’re okay.”

But oh, it felt so intense. Their faces and bodies were so close, and the swaying of Harriet's waist on his lap created passionate friction. CLICK! Two maids walked into the library. They were joking together and walking through the bookcases until they saw the center area where the reading tables were. No one was there, but there were a few books scattered on the table. "Huh? Why are these books not returned?” asked one of them. "Just arrange it neatly there. Maybe Young Lord or Madam will come back for it," said the other.

Annie would be coming to see her at 7am, she couldn’t wait for that long so she called one of the maids to help her have a wash and informed them about the three guests. The library is situated on the second storey above the ground floor. The four men walk fast but quietly. They pass some close doors and the three men are wondering as to how many people live in this huge house. The dim light in the hallway is enough for them to see where they are going. Francois stops in front of a polished old oak door. He pulls a hanging switch and an old antique lamp lights up. Then he takes out a key from his pocket. The three men saw this and had the same thoughts as to why put a lock on a library door?

Again I had the disturbing thought that there had to be a singular person coordinating their movements… Or an organization. I was wasting time pondering when the answers could be right here in front of me. I cracked my knuckles and watched the men squirm as they watched me approach. “Gentlemen,” my tone suggested I thought of them as anything but, “have either of you ever spent much time in a library?” Their blank and confused expressions indicated this was exceedingly unlikely. “Well, when one needs information, more scholarly folks would go to the library and crack open the spines of some books until they found what they needed.” I gave my most sinister grin, “I confess that I use a simila
