QUINN “So he just got up and walked away?” Kyla asks incredulously as she lathers shampoo into her hair. “Shhh!” I dart my eyes around the locker room- Kyla and I are the only ones in the showers right now, but there’s no telling who’s at the sinks or toilets on the other side of the wall and I don’t need anybody eavesdropping on this conversation. Kyla mouths the word ‘sorry’, still sudsing up the shampoo on her head.

“Don’t start, Ash.” She stepped closer, grinning wide like a schoolgirl with fresh gossip. “I’m just saying… Aaric’s place really suits you. Or maybe more accurately—his bed suits you.” I turned slowly and shot her a glare sharp enough to freeze the A****n River. Ashley just laughed, clearly proud of herself for getting under my skin. But before I could deliver a line sharp enough to kill, Megan’s voice came from the doorway of the dressing room. “Ash,” she said flatly, without a shred of emotion, “your mouth is about to land Maya on next week’s headlines. Zip it.”

I stepped back into the corridor and looked around at the clusters of teammates catching up and unpacking and being loud about it. “Excuse me,” I said. They all looked at me. “Locker room. Meeting. Few minutes. Let’s go.” The murmuring started immediately but I was already walking. First one through the locker room door. Ken came in behind me and took the seat next to mine and offered a small easy smile that I returned without thinking about it. ROSE I walked out of the bathroom with Meghan, talking. She was telling me about her nine year old son and his daily fights in the school. I was laughing at a particular story where Meghan’s son’s classmate had tricked him to go into a girl’s washroom, and that’s how Mr. Walkers had found us. “Oh, there you are… I have been searching for you…” He said, his arms opening wide as he came forward. Oh my god! Is he going to hug me now?

Finally realising that it had been a long time, Kate went to the shower. ******* After unlocking the door of the room with a magnetic key, Margaret stepped aside and let Megan in. She looked around the room cautiously and seeing nothing suspicious, calmed down a little. “You need to calm down and change. Here, these are mine but our size is probably the same, so they should fit,” and Margaret offered her some clothes. “The bathroom is over there,” but Megan said nothing. She hesitantly took the clothes and closed the bathroom door, and Margaret heard the lock click.

People don’t question you when you look like you know what you’re doing. I slip into the room, thanking my lucky stars that I’ve managed to locate a locker room intended for train station employees. Several dull grey lockers line the walls, along with a couple of benches and a private bathroom off to the side. It’s empty, too, which is a massive bonus. There’s no time to linger, though. Loitering is bound to draw someone’s attention.

Brian frowned and asked, “Since when did you have so many locks?” “Today,” Megan plainly answered. She pointed to the couch and said, “Let’s watch a movie.” Megan quickly turned and played the movie on the DVD player. She settled next to Brian, purposely rubbing her bosom against his arm. The audacity of it pissed me off more than it should have. I was still turning the whole mess over in my head, jaw tight, when the locker room door burst open again. Megan—my twin sister—strode in like she owned the damn place. A couple of my teammates looked up immediately. “Hey, Megan!” one of them called out. “Looking sharp as always. Good to see you.” Another guy, still lacing his shoes, grinned. “Megan! You sticking around for the after-party?” She waved them off with a charming smile, but her eyes were already locked on me.
