The door opened before I could reach it, and Lionel stood there with an expression that was equal parts sympathy and curiosity.
"That bad, huh?" he asked, taking in my face.
"Worse," I admitted, brushing past him into the foyer. "Is everyone waiting?"
"In the war room," he said, which was our family's nickname for the formal sitting room where we held all our serious discussions. "Mom's stress-baking, Dad's pacing, and Lucas looks like he wants to murder someone. So, you know, typical Blackwood family crisis mode."
Despite everything, I felt a small smile tug at my lips. This was my family—dramatic, overbearing, fiercely protective, and absolutely incapable of giving me space when I was hurt
