It had been a week since the incident with Heather, and I was ready to return to school, acting as if nothing had happened. The next day I treated it like any other ordinary day.

They’d even taken the precaution of arranging for a wet nurse in case she didn’t survive the process. At first, Kendra didn’t understand why they were so eager for the zombie cure, since they clearly lived in a world apart from the one she’d grown up in. Then, one day an alarm was raised to announce the fact that a zombie had wandered into the village. This was her first clue that, although there was a cloak to hide the visibility of the entrance/exit of the village, it didn’t seal it. Zombies – or humans – could find themselves inside the village without knowing how they got there.

Thousands of Junes lined up, each holding a Golden Book. Thousands of Dantes stood beside them. A warehouse of stories. June staggered to her feet, head spinning. Next to her, another June—identical, but in a nurse’s uniform—turned and whispered, “Which version are you? Did you make it to the Oven, or die in the Pantry?”

I knew that we'd have a minute or two to escape while he laid on the floor burning in my flames. He would have to get to the shower quickly. I jumped up and sprinted towards Mason, he had stood up and was staring at Azael while he rolled around screaming. I grabbed his hand and pulled a shell-shocked Mason out of the room. In fact, there was so much room between the size of the cover and the size of the pages that crystal tucked right up into the gap when she set the book on end. It was a perfect fit.

All of them screamed as they were transported back to Wisconsin. In just a second, they all landed in a heap near “The Devil’s Dining Table” on Belmont Mound, present day. The rising sun was already shining in the east. They all breathed hard and fast and dusted themselves off. Their eyes grew wide when they saw that Mazoi was with them and the Egyptian history book was lying on the ground. Elise took it. “What are you doing here?” Eric’s voice was hoarse with frantic, asking the innocent Medjay. “I don’t know, foreigner!” Mazoi was surprised as well to see himself in a strange looking place.
