Just skin and the softest material between us. My fingers tightened around the book. I reached the back of the library, where the shelves were taller and the light dimmer. Dust floated in the sunlight peeking through the high window, making everything feel old and forgotten. I found the spot where the book belonged and carefully slid it into place. My heart was beating a little faster now, and I didn’t know why. Or maybe I did, and I just didn’t want to admit it. I turned around, ready to walk back to my table. But as I moved past the first row of shelves, I suddenly felt a hand grip my wrist firmly.

I had been there for nearly two hours, moving between the restricted ledgers with a weak-looking lamp and the careful steps of someone who expected to be caught at any moment. The troop-movement crystal from the catacombs had given me new names. The forged marriage contract had given me new connections. The day’s public h

That thought was quickly tossed aside because if that was the case, the noises I made by kicking in a window aloud with my own cries and outburst from dressing my wounds would undoubtedly have been heard. Curled up between the two chairs with my face barely sticking out of my sleeping bag, my eyelids feel weighted with exhaustion and the comfort of finally being warm. The small LED lantern is in the dimmest mode, sitting on the table beside me casting a soft warm light. I usually sleep best in pitch black darkness, but am not brave or crazy enough to sleep without a light turned on while I'm inside this abandoned building at night. The last thing I remember doing before passing out for the n

The guardians exchanged concerned glances, the weight of their mission pressing down on them. They took a step forward, their boots crunching on the ancient stone floor. Inside, the library stretched into an endless expanse, its shelves crammed with countless books and scrolls. An eerie luminescence emanating from within the texts provided the only source of light, casting long, distorted shadows that danced on the walls. The air crackled with a faint electricity, and the whispers that had plagued the world for months manifested in the library. They swirled around the guardians, a cacophony of unsettling voices speaking of forgotten powers, forbidden rituals, and the seductive allure of darkn

Afterwards, a courier delivered a note to her chamber. It wasn’t signed. It wasn’t sealed. But the handwriting was unmistakable. > “Meet me in the library at midnight. Come alone. No excuses. —E” She burned the note after reading it. That night, Evelyn stood outside the vast mahogany doors of the library, her heart hammering in her chest. The halls were empty, lit only by moonlight. It felt like even the house was holding its breath. She stepped inside. The library was a cathedral of knowledge. Towering shelves, ancient tomes, and chandeliers that glowed without flame.
