Mykel’s wolf was silver, a breed of wolf known for their extraordinary gifts. This year was our turn to hold the annual Alpha meeting. Ever since Mykel stepped up and took over from his father, he had avoided each one with the excuse he wasn’t ready. But not this year, had we refused to accommodate it would have been seen as a great disrespect to the surrounding packs as well as those who are coming from further away.

“Because there was no Milo who was after you!” At my words, her mouth dropped to the floor. I went closer to her and circled her. “Alpha Rudy of the Neon pack is a friend and when I asked him about Milo in his pack, he said, there is none that goes by that name. So my other option was to find a ‘Milo’ for you.” I scoffed as I pointed at Milo, who was standing a few feet away. “He happens to be the only other Milo in this vicinity and he—” I glared at her with repugnance. “He lives in a small community, a few miles from the Neon pack. Guess what community is that?” When she froze, I couldn’t help sneering. “Yes, that’s the only red-light area for wolves.”

Verina’s wolves fanned out on either side of her, all of them large, dark, with glowing red eyes, crouching down, ready to hurl themselves at my pack. My wolves were equally prepared, stooping low, finding their centers of gravity so they could launch off of the ground and meet any attack midair. Or be the first to strike.

Certainly in werewolf communities. A wolf was a proud and territorial animal. That’s why between Alpha’s who weren’t from the same summit, there were always testosterone driven stand-offs. I remember when Pernwél told me about her first encounter with Alpha Zane at Green Valley, the same way I recalled Beta Nico. Normally ranked wolves gave me shudders, after what happened at my old pack. How things can change, I thought. Now, I, myself was mated to one, becoming Beta of Grey Moon. “All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.” Jake burst through my thoughts carrying wise words on his tongue.

Wouldn't leave everything behind. The two wolves got closer. Realized I was standing above them. The larger of the two looked up at me. Cocked his eyebrow up at my hair whipping in the wind. From the looks of him, he was surely the son of an Alpha. Or the grandson. The other wolf was small by comparison.

Surely there couldn't be two books with the exact same title. How many times she'd been told that the legendary book had disappeared some generations back. That book - or the book, as they always emphasized it - was rumored to hold all the details of their pack history, all the genealogy charts of the genealogy and history of her pack. She was well aware it had been lost for years until hints of its reappearance popped up. It was all too much of a coincidence - the mention of this town, Calderwood, and the presence of the author of Wolf in that place, were like beacons leading her on her search. Not to mention the reference to the book.

The child’s eyes blazed gold again. And suddenly, the howling changed. From behind the enemy ranks. From the mountains. New wolves emerged. Not black-bannered. Not Frostveil. Not Silver Fang. Ancient markings scarred into their fur. They did not attack either side. They formed a circle. Around the battlefield. The king’s expression finally shifted. “What is this?” Mira reached outward with one tiny hand. The ancient wolves bowed. Not to Kael. Not to Rowan. Not to Lyra.

Oscar vigorously shook his head. “It was more than just being in pain,” he said. “Most of the time, wolves bond with us. It’s on rare occasions that we meet what we’d call a rebel. You have before you, one of the rebels. We don’t meet wolves of his nature often, thank goodness.” I slid my fingers through the wired opening so that the wolf could lick them. “That’s so difficult to believe,” I mused. “Lisa,” Kenzie warned, “don’t press your luck.”

Her voice was urgent, almost panicked, and it sent a cold wave of fear crashing through Elara's chest. "What's happening?" Elara asked, her voice trembling as she grabbed Mira's arm. "What's going on out there?" Mira hesitated, biting her lip, and then she sighed, her shoulders sagging with the weight of whatever news she was carrying. "There are wolves from another pack at the border," she said quietly. "Blackfang Pack. They're asking questions, looking for someone. A pregnant omega who ran from their territory a few months ago."

Wolves stood on the porch, on the stairs, pressed against walls, offering their silent support. This was what a good pack looked like; unified, fierce, protective. Ready to tear the world apart for one of their own. Inside, Milo remained unconscious, breathing shallowly, caught somewhere between life and the dark. But he wasn’t alone. Not while the pack stood watch.
