It is listening. Behind us, branches snap. One of the werewolves, Dax, and the female mercenary, Liora, are arguing about direction. Therin’s voice joins in, smooth and mocking. Elyra glides ahead, muttering something that might be a spell. The she-wolf, Renna, keeps close to the witch’s shadow, and the older wolf, Corran, trails her protectively. The rest scatter into fog. “Just a tip,” the Herald’s voice booms from nowhere. “The forest feeds on loneliness!”

A rustle of snow. A shadow moved. Then— A lone wolf stepped out of the darkness. Massive. Black fur. Eyes glowing silver. Rylan stiffened instantly. “Not possible.” Kade swore. “That can’t be—” Lyra’s heartbeat tripped. The wolf lowered its head… in a bow. “What is that?” she whispered. Rylan’s voice was barely human. “A sentinel.” Lyra’s breath caught. Sentinels were ancient wolves said to serve only one bloodline—one house. A house believed extinct.

Her voice was quiet, but heavy. “The wolves of the Eclipse.” Luka frowned. “What about them?” She lifted her gaze, and for the first time since waking, she looked truly, deeply unnerved. “According to this,” she murmured, “they weren’t just wolves.” She slowly turned the book around, revealing an aged illustration. Two wolves stood beneath an eclipsed moon—one black, one white. Tangled together. Bound. She took a slow breath. “They were more than mates.” Theoden’s jaw clenched.

His skin grew several layers, dislodging the Alpha's initial bite, and, tumbling away, he got to his feet, turning to meet his attacker head-on. The Wolf Haven's Alpha was a giant grey creature, covered in scars, denoting his rank as he'd obviously fought off a lot of challenges throughout his reign. He didn't attack straight away, circling instead, as Kellen leaped off the porch, gaining more room to move by being on the ground. All around them, yellow eyes emerged from the darkness, silently bearing witness to the battle threatening to erupt. When two Alpha's fought, the rules were clear; no one must interfere, and it was a fight to the death. The Wolf Haven pack had to obey these rules.

She shook out. *Where the heck are we anyhow, hopefully lover boy knows the way back,* Mila said. *I don’t want to go back, ever,* I said, matter of fact.
