The m‍assive facility​ was eerily quiet, th‌e usual executive‍ ve⁠hi⁠cles conspicuou‍sly ab‍sent​.

PROCEED TO SECURITY BAY 4 FOR MANUAL VERIFICATION AND RECLAMATION STAMPING.” ​The massive, three-ton titanium pressure gate groaned upward, releasing a cloud of warm, clean air that smelled of ozone and expensive synthetic perfume—a stark contrast to the wet rust and salt of the lowlands.

Pashtan took over an old tower and surrounded it with a large garden. The region from the new wall to the old wall was a wide buffer zone designed to protect the inner city. The rain had stopped, leaving the night air thick with fog and wet asphalt. The tall iron perimeter fence was fifty feet away. Beyond that gate was Staten Island, an open road, and a bus straight to Mrs. Gable's apartment. I took three long, fast strides into the open yard. A heavy beam of light hit me right in the eyes.

I had no idea there was a place like this in one of the biggest cities in the world, but I figured even New York and Los Angeles have larger estates.
