I sucked in a breath and nodded. He was right. The outline was nothing compared to the shading as he colored in the design… which I still had yet to see. I flinched at the pain. The feeling was more annoying than actual pain. It was like a constant stinging or burning that never seemed to end as it dragged across my skin over and over again. It felt like talons were digging into sun burnt flesh, already scorched and in need of reprieve. Now and then, he wiped away the ink and blood but always returned with his head lowered in stoic form. His face was a wall of complete concentration, hand perfectly steady. Maybe that’s why he was such a great hunter. Firm. Stable.

"Compared to what you went through on that balcony, this is practically nothing." I floated above him, looking down at his miserable state. I felt nothing. Did he think this would make me forgive him? What he went through wasn't even a fraction of what I suffered on that lonely, desperate, freezing night. At night, Hunter returned to that pitch-black villa. There was no water or heating. In the dead of winter, the house was as cold as a morgue. He had no blanket, so the only thing covering his body was a worn-out red scarf with fuzzballs.

A flash illuminated the darkest night of my life. Through tears, I roared ferociously, unleashing all my pain, fury, and hatred coursing through my veins. Hunter approached, looking down at me with a diabolical grin on his fanged face. “I’ll see you in hell, child!” Hunter snarled, driving his claws into my chest and ripping out my heart.

Each small token felt like a small verdict handed down on someone’s life. I thought about the hunters, about the way they moved like a religion, how they had lists and codes and a taste for ritual. They were a force that cut in both directions. To control them would mean to get my hands into a machinery I was not sure I wanted to understand. But controlling the hunters meant fewer surprises. But that feeling grew and swiftly turned into something heavy, one that kept me awake and restless in the dead of the night.
