After all, Raven didn't want to give away too much information about her interests. Before either of us could speak again, a raven landed on the stone railing only a few feet away. Its feathers were black enough to swallow the afternoon light. Tied around one leg was a narrow strip of dark cloth. The bird ignored Kael completely. Its black eyes remained fixed on me. A harsh cry split the silence. Then the strip of cloth slipped loose and drifted onto the balcony floor. Kael bent down and picked it up. Only six words had been written in crimson ink. The First Seal breaks at moonrise. The instant he finished reading, the raven burst into crimson fire.

For the impending battle, I smiled and slicked back my hair, which complied effortlessly. I turned to Mabel. “Run and find a place to hide,” I commanded. I sidestepped with agility, causing it to miss, then gripped it by the tail and swung it into another. They kept coming, each taking turns to attack. Like a beast I am, I took them down, beheading them one by one.
