Queen slumped back on her heels, her mascara-streaked face turned away as she stared at the expensive rug beneath them. The silence stretched, the old clock ticking steadily behind them.
She sniffled, wiping her nose with the back of her hand like a child.
“He is… he is breaking me, Lady Frances,” she whispered. “I have come too far. I can’t lose him. I won’t.”
Lady Frances stroked her hair once more, her sigh low and almost sad.
