The Scorch Trials Novels & Stories

she said, finding my confused gaze again. "Aaron? But their nests are impossible to find. Not unless... light have mercy," I said, feeling like I'd been punched in the chest. "We're gonna go," Lills mumbled, getting to her feet. I nodded, too lost for words to find the one's that would make her stay. Scorchers were dangerous, a militia that stood outside the rules and laws the rest of us lived by. They were those who'd committed their lives to the destruction of every non human creature beyond the borders of the Diarna, the furthest mining town in the south. They married their work and bred for numbers. They were smart, strong and loyal to a fault and would rather see our entire world blaze

Chase shot out backward like a cannonball and crashed hard into a tree. "Bastard!" Chase struggled to stand. There was a dent in his chest, and it felt like his internal organs were squashed. He was in great pain. "Either you or I will die today, Chase Collins!" Scoot grunted coldly. The vital energy in his body boiled, forming a burning golden flame that scorched the plants all around him. He leaped into the air and raised his blade high. The blade was burning furiously, powerful heat emanating from it.

“No one will lay a hand on her.” “It doesn’t have to be combat,” Merek said slyly. “Let her take the Trial of Proven Flame. Let her walk the sacred stones. Let her face what we all faced when we came of age. If she is truly meant to lead, the Goddess will protect her.” I swallowed hard. I’d heard of the Trial. A walk across the blistering firestones—stone pathways imbued with old magic, each one testing a wolf’s spirit, pain threshold, and will. Many had collapsed, and some had died.

One of them, a tall alpha with scars across his jaw, stepped forward. "First trial begins now," he announced. "Timed run through the woods. Each team must retrieve three marked flags. Teams stay paired at all times. Anyone caught alone forfeits the trial." Jason's stomach dropped. He was still assigned to Avalon, and the thought of spending hours alone with him in the forest made his skin crawl. But worse than that was the physical challenge ahead. A run through rough terrain meant sweating, and sweating meant his scent blocker would weaken. "Go back to your cabins," the instructor continued. "Freshen up, eat breakfast, then report back here in one hour."

“Don’t give her another chance to say you lost control.” Joy had bitten her tongue. Not out of peace. Out of survival. If she’d opened her mouth, she might’ve said something that landed her in suspension. And suspension wasn’t an option. The Trials were in two days. Thornecrest’s next bloodsport. A formalized, sanctioned way for elite houses to tear each other apart and look good doing it. Before that? Two days of silence. Two days of secrets. Two days of prep. And Fiero had a call to make.

Michele's voice pulled me back to reality. "If she hadn't left all those years ago, the woman at my side would be a gambler. How could it be an angel like you? Tomorrow is our 99th day together, and I'm putting the most profitable strip club in Vallasia under your name." Michele looked at Barbara with complete indulgence and pinched her cheek playfully. Barbara laughed softly and leaned in to kiss him. A sudden, stabbing pain tore through my side, forcing a sharp gasp from me. It was the scar I had carried for five years, left behind when I sold a kidney just to stay alive after I failed to repay my loan.

Scott continued, "You made Shirley suffer so much, and now I'm going to make sure you experience every bit of it yourself. "Since you love throwing yourself down the stairs, you can do it a few more times. Since you love stabbing yourself, you can keep it up." As Nicole clutched her throat, her eyes widened with every word he spoke. She wanted to beg for mercy, but seeing the icy, dead look in his and Devin's eyes, she finally dropped the act altogether.

she informed Beta Aaron, who respectfully nodded in understanding. "Prepare the ceremonial bowl," he ordered two guards. They were quick to carry over a golden bowl, setting it down in front of us. Luna Selene stepped forward, lighting a match and throwing it into the bowl. Violent flames surged from the bowl. Beta Aaron handed each of us a blade. "A drop of blood into the ceremonial bowl. If the fire turns black, you will be disqualified from participating in the Trials," he explained, keeping his hands behind his back. The she-wolves formed a line, stepping up to the ceremonial bowl.

"And then there's the final stage—a nighttime hunt. It's about tracking, stamina, and teamwork in complete darkness. You must navigate treacherous terrain, follow the scent trails, and capture the designated 'prey.' It's as much a mental challenge as it is physical." "And you completed all of that?" Marc asked, his tone bordering on disbelief. "Yes," I said, my voice softening. "It's gruelling but enjoyable, too. The trials are open to any warrior aged eighteen to thirty who wants to prove they're the best. Even some Alphas, Betas, and Gammas enter, not just to win but for the bragging rights that come with completing it." Marc and Cole exchanged a glance, their expressions mixed with admira
