Before then, I didn’t have need for reading. Reading eased the pain of my family’s death. I wasn’t sure I would be here without it. I started dusting them and the shelves. I had an allergic reaction to dust. I covered my nose and was careful not to let any dust into them. I was at the third shelf when I noticed something. When I passed a part of the third shelf, light twinkled. To be sure I wasn’t seeing things, I did it again. The light sparkled again. This time, I slowly walked past the shelf to see exactly where the light was coming from. I stopped when I saw a book shine. It was nothing like I ever saw.

“Something real. Not a memory of a party or a name of a person we both hate. Tell me something you see right now.” I looked around the room. I saw the way the firelight danced on the gold leaf of the book spines. I saw the dust motes dancing in the air like tiny, silent stars. I saw the way the shadows made him look younger, softer. “I see the fire,” I said, my voice low and melodic. “It’s dying down to embers, a soft, glowing orange. It looks like the heart of a mountain. And the books… they look like a city of paper, all standing at attention, waiting for someone to listen to them. And I see a man who is far more than the darkness he’s been handed.”

“I couldn’t sleep… I was looking for a book.” With little choice, Sparkle walked into the room and took a quick look around. This room was gorgeous during the day, but at night, with flickering shadows floating around... it was purely amazing. Really, was there anything prettier than a firelight? When she shifted her gaze back to him, Sparkle realized the glow from the fire shining in his dark brown eyes was nearly hypnotic. Which was a silly thought to have, so she pushed it away fast. “Would you mind terribly if I borrow one of your books? TV is just so boring and…”

Mason. The golden morning sun spills into the library, creating spectral dancing patterns on the brown wooden floor. A little ray shading on my face but that didn't deter my attention from the fantasy book I was reading. I blink away the tiredness forming on my eyelids for the umpteenth time, flicking to the next page. Not attempting to allow myself to fall asleep. I can't! Every fucking time I close my eyes I can't help but see a bloody vivid image of that gore sight I saw earlier. It makes my skin crawl. I hate it!

But then… "It's fine. I'm comfortable you don't have to worry about me." I kept a straight face. I didn't want to give her false hope or extend the courtesy of friendship even in the real sense I was still careful around her. "Can I get you something to drink?" "Nah, I'm good. I asked again and smiled when she shook her head. “Good girl. So you will strip and sit on that couch while you fuck yourself in front of me. No sounds, understood?” “B-but what if I slip out a sound by accident? And what if they see me—” “The projector captures only this far.” I gestured from my desk to the window. “So you're safe. And if you slip out a sound by accident, that means more punishment because you'll be letting others hear what was meant to be just mine.”

The room was dark except for a strange, shimmering light coming from the far end. My feet carried me toward it, my pulse racing with a mix of fear and curiosity. When I reached the source of the light, my breath caught in my throat. An old, weathered book sat on a pedestal, its pages glowing with an ethereal light. The symbols on the cover were unlike anything I had ever seen—ancient, magical, and somehow… familiar. I hesitated for a moment, glancing around the room as if expecting someone to jump out and stop me. But there was no one. Only the persistent call of the voice urging me to look deeper. I reached out, my hand trembling as I touched the glowing book.

Well, while I caught my breath. While Orion scanned our surroundings, peering through the narrow gaps in between each shelf to the maze beyond, I found myself looking over the books at our backs. There were tombs both big and small, thick and thin, bound in various types of leathers and fabrics. Some had thick layers of dust clinging to them, while others appeared almost new. Another shelf moved, opening a path directly ahead of us. Towards the bottom sat a book that glowed, emitting a golden light brighter than that of the torches. It pulsated, flickering and dancing, and I had the strangest thought that it was calling out to me.

For an endless, breathless moment, the room was consumed in a blinding light that stung my eyes and made me grind my teeth. But then, just when I began to fear I had made some catastrophic mistake, the illumination slowly ebbed away. Both the book and the moonstone stopped glowing; for now, at least. Dazed, I blinked away the spots dancing across my vision, refocusing my eyes on the yellowed pages in front of me. They looked the same. Utterly the same. “What the…” I whispered to myself as I flipped through the pages. “What the hell was that?” “Nina? Everything okay?”
