I kept walking toward the back wall then I saw something strange. A soft golden glow appeared between two massive bookshelves I walked past a thousand times. It was a hidden section. The books here looked ancient, their leather spines shimmering faintly. Titles like The Touch of Shadows, Bound by Moonlight, and Whispers After Dark seemed to pulse with their own light. My fingers trembled as I reached out and pulled one book from the shelf. It felt warm, almost alive. I was so curious to see so I opened it slowly.

And somewhere in the shadows of my quiet apartment, something very old… stirred. I finally summoned courage to slam the book shut with a sharp snap that echoed through my quiet apartment. My heart was racing, skin flushed hot despite the cool rain still pattering against the windows. That invisible presence lingered in the air like heavy incense — thick, masculine, and far too interested. I couldn’t explain it, but every instinct screamed that opening that book any further tonight would be dangerous. “No,” I whispered to the empty room. “Not tonight.”

The pages held explicit stories that made my cheeks burn and my body ache. I settled on the floor behind a dusty shelf, a flashlight on my phone, and opened the book. The words painted vivid pictures — hands sliding under skirts, mouths claiming skin, bodies pressed together in hidden corners. My breathing grew shallow. I squeezed my thighs together, trying to ignore the growing heat between them. “What are you reading, Miss Vale?”

I counted up to three in my mind before opening my eyes and when I looked at the book, I relaxed and smiled when I saw that my face was still well, so I tore it completely. “What is your problem?” I immediately asked Shin and then looked at him. “Why are you shouting? Why did you frighten me?” “I didn’t scare you.” “You suddenly screamed.” “You’re not listening to what I’m saying?” I smiled. “No...” I answered slowly. “Don’t talk to me.” Shin said, annoyingly. “Wait? Slowly, I raised my eyes and met her chilling gaze, "The path I show you may lead to ruin, and once started cannot be reversed." As the sun sets outside and shadows lengthen across the floor, I can't tear myself away. There is a terrible beauty in this book, a seductive allure that draws me deeper within its pages. I wonder if I should put it back, return it to the shadows where it lay hidden for so long. I pull back with a gasp, but no one else seems to notice the golden glow that is beginning to permeate through the book. I look hard at what’s being portrayed, and it’s the image of a beast with large horns. What does this even mean? Why did this book fall to the ground, and why did it stop here? Is this some kind of warning? I reach for the book to see for myself. But then the book moves once again, but not in the way it was before; pages don’t go by; this time it just shakes, and it glows a bright red. “What is happening?” I want to cry, but I can’t; I don’t want to. Crying is a waste of time at this point.

“Put your finger out.” I do as he says, and I wait for the burn to come, but it doesn’t. I close my eyes to numb any pain if it comes. I slowly open my eyes to see why I didn't burn. My finger is glittering. I’m blown away. “I’m like Edward right now,” I say, grinning, thinking about the Twilight books. The author did an excellent job in a lot of things regarding the supernatural. I walk out of the cave, still masking my scent, and bathe my body under the sun.

"Are you trying to change something about yourself?" He was quiet for a moment. "Maybe. Or maybe I'm just trying to figure out who I actually am underneath all the expectations."
