“Haaa, I thought I was going to die from being so nervous.” “Keep talking and you might actually.” Terry pointed and they all saw Dylan's brow squeeze up in displease. Their lips all fell shut at once and like they all knew what to do, the car fell in absolute silence. He faced the road once again but then Lucas threw a glance his way. “What?” He mouthed. Lucas turned his eyes back on the road and went silent. “It's nothing.” He finally replied. Without questioning him further, he turned his gaze away, taking Lucas's answer for what it was.

" Boom— The thunder hit like it was aimed at me. Like something inside me just ripped apart. I wanted to vanish. To curl up somewhere no one could see me. But where? It was all rain. All thunder. All his voice, laughing. Then William called. "Joelle?" His voice was so calm, it cut through everything—the thunder, the rain, even the echo of Nathan's voice. "Are you crying?" I wanted to say no. Really tried. But nothing came out. And like my silence gave him the answer, the tears just broke loose. "Stay where you are," he said, steady as ever. "I'm coming to get you." *** Nathan was single again. A bunch of spoiled rich kids threw a "singles party" at the club, drowning in shots and laughs.

No one knew when it could reopen. Benjamin approached, wanting to offer some words of comfort, but nothing came. He, who could speak circles around anyone in business, now stood helpless and mute in front of her. Before he could speak, Nissa lifted her phone. Her eyes were dull, expression gray. On the screen was a single sentence. "Did you do this?" Benjamin froze. She suspected him? He could not believe it. A wave of cold ran through his chest, his heart gripped by grief, anger, and emptiness.

“For now.” Silas’s smile was a flash of white in the twilight. “Excellent.” And as the creature of silence lunged, our fragile, treacherous alliance began. “For now,” I repeated, the words a promise and a threat woven together. Cassian snapped, though his voice dropped slightly. Selene walked back to her desk and glanced down at her cell phone, which was sitting face-down right next to her laptop. Reaching out, she turned it over and tapped the screen. The screen lit up with a long list of missed calls from Cassian and his marketing staff. At the very top, the small icon of a slashed bell showed that the phone was still set to total silence. She had turned the volume off two hours ago, wanting to drown out every single thought of him with work.

Just silence. And somehow, that silence said everything.

She tried to roll onto her side, her arms wrapped around herself, but Jozef held her in place, his frantic face swimming in and out of her vision. Suddenly the orchestra seemed louder. They were playing an instrumental version of 'The Sound of Silence'. Tears gathered in her eyes as she realized how perfect the song was. With Jozef she was surrounded by silence, and like the lyrics of the song, the silence had become an old friend. Without the constant chatter of voices, she could hear the beat of her own heart, see the expressions on her lover's face as they sat together speaking their silence.

She didn’t know then that some silences weren’t empty. They were waiting. Waiting for the moment they could break everything open.
