I was prepared for this. I tucked her into bed and mind-linked two pack members who were here helping with training to guard our door and the window outside. I wasn't risking anything with my mate and pups. I changed my clothes. Grabbing my combat boots and my kevlar-laced leather jacket out of the closet. I was going to get my niece and nephew back. It was time for Maddox to go away and Dexter to take control. I loosened the wall where I kept Dexter in my mind. "Buddy, you ready for war."

He reached out and snatched the smoking rifle from the hands of a trembling Ironhead ganger who looked barely out of his teens.

I threw myself on the ground, rolled to the side and pulled the trigger. The foremost soldier flew backwards, cracked the second with and Kael finished the third with a targeted shot from the hip. We were a perfect, deadly unit. The Commander and the junk collector. But the consortium did not give up. A shrill, disgusting summation the fight noise.
