I couldn't wait to cup her beautiful face and stare into her eyes until I memorized every shade and every freckle. “I didn’t know that,” she mumbled. “What did the legend say?” I wasn’t surprised. The legend of the Goddess of Gold was kept a secret. There was only one book that mentioned it. It was the book only kings had access to. “The Goddess of Gold is a mortal deity that takes the form of a wolf,” I started my story. “According to legend, everything she touches with the claw on her right paw turns into gold.” I lifted my hand and caressed Maddie’s cheek. I couldn't hold back. I needed to feel her skin under my fingertips.

Lady Golden asked, freeing herself from their grips and making her way to a middle-aged man standing beside her personal maid. As I tried to process what was happening, Alpha Ricardo entered the room with another man. The moment Lady Golden saw the stranger, she gasped and stepped backward in fear. "I called you all here to expose this woman," he spoke and pushed the man forward. "Speak," he ordered, and the man quickly nodded.

He wrote the first line of a new chapter. "Once, there was a man who was a beast, and a woman who was a ghost. They lived in a city of gold that turned to dust, but they found a truth that the fire couldn't touch." Behind him, a woman with tangled hair and a diamond-encased wooden ring walked out of the morning mist. She didn't have a suit, and she didn't have a name. She looked at the man writing on the wreckage and felt a strange, impossible sense of gravity.

It felt like a cold, hungry void. ​"The Luna..." the woman rasped. Her voice sounded like two stones grinding together at the bottom of the sea. "They said... the gold arrived. They said the contract was broken." ​She collapsed to her knees. A pool of dark, oily water began to spread from beneath her skirts. ​"Help... us," she choked out.

I sat straighter, trying to catch a glimpse of the next room, but it was even darker than the hallway. “Are you with Mr. Griffiths?” asked the woman. “Yes.” My gaze settled on her gold necklace, which rested in a perfect circle around her collarbones with golden spokes that reached down to her cleavage. I wasn’t sure if what she was wearing were antiquities or reproductions, but she looked far too fancy to work in a place like this. She sat behind her desk, stared into her computer, and placed a hand on the mouse. I glanced at Griff, but he remained engrossed in his magazine.

As soon as the window opens, the woman exclaims. "You are our Kolya's friend, right!?" The old woman is none other than Beth. Her smile is so big that it scares Gold a little. "Uhm—" The golden boy isn’t sure how to respond. He wants to say that it's actually the opposite, but he is certain that it's rude. Also, He's too curious to formulate a response. First off, how did she know him? Does Kolya talk about him? "Are you here to visit him?" Beth's eyes sparkle, making it hard for Gold to break the woman's heart. As much as he hates to admit it, Gold has a soft spot for babies and elderlies.

Elixir’s POV The area between the gold statues and Soren feels like a tense standoff—quiet but about to blow. You could cut the tension with a knife. My heart's hammering in my chest like crazy, warning me. I try to move, to get away from whatever's holding me here, but I can't. The gold woman—the one who looks just like me—is staring at me blankly. You don't get it yet, she says, her voice smooth. But you will.

“Why aren’t you reading that at home in peace and quiet?” The woman glanced at me over the rim of her glass, her eyes a piercing green that seemed to reflect the neon lights flashing around us. “The noise helps,” she replied, taking a sip of her drink. “It reminds me that reality is always there, no matter how much I try to escape into fiction.” I tilted my head, curious. “What’s the book about?” She glanced at the cover, running her finger over the worn edges before answering. “It’s about a woman who was reborn to get revenge on her cheating husband. He betrayed her, and in her second life, she’s determined to make him pay.”

“Who allowed filth into my house!?” We paused, our necks snapping towards the direction of the voice. Heels clicked against the marble stairs as a woman, dipped in flashy designers made her way down. Her dark hair was covered with strands of grey hair, her lips bright red, and a huge, gold ring that shimmered underneath the lights. Her dark grey eyes fixed on me as she reached us, her face twisting in disgust. I swallowed hard, my heart racing rapidly as a sense of dread washed over me. “Who would have thought,” she scoffed, eyes sliding up and down my frame as she twirled strands of her hair between her fingers, “That the gold digger would find her way back into our lives.”

I look around as I struggle with this dirty brown wolf, before I snap its neck. I spot Ember, my god she is stunning as she fights back to back with what I assume is her mother. The Gold wolf is even bigger than Saints and has what I can only describe as a golden aura shaped like battle gear surrounding her. Ember is smaller but fast, she fights as good as her mother, they look stunning.
