She told me, making me realize if Jet had asked her to stay indoors. I opened my mouth to respond to her but instead of words, it was a choking sound that escaped my lips. Wrapping my hands around my throat, I panted, trying to draw in some breath but was finding it extremely difficult. It’s like air was being sucked out of my lungs…oh no! Jet! I cried inwardly, trying to drag myself from the floor but to no avail, I felt stuck, unable to move.

I gulped a hard lump down my throat and gasped in pain. "Water. Please." I took a deep breath, trying not to suffocate. He was hearing me. I faced the speaker. "This is exactly what you want. You got it. You broke me! You broke me!" I choked harder repeatedly, unable to stop. "Water!" Tears were drizzling from my cheeks like the morning rain. Nothing came through. My throat was clogged and hurting me more with each second that passed. Just a drop of water. "Please."

My stomach churned and my palms started to get clammy. “I—” I started to say but I couldn’t get any other words out. My throat felt dry and rough like sandpaper. I took a long pause before deciding to try again. “I-I’m-I’m not usually l-like that, I promise.” Speaking had never felt so difficult until that moment. It felt as if I had something stuck in my throat that made it difficult to speak. I twiddled my thumbs and tapped my foot on the ground repeatedly, I was a nervous wreck and with a thousand things happening to me at once, it felt like I’d pass out from panic.

My actions were so unexpected that I startled them both into immobility. I raced downstairs and demanded that they both join me in the kitchen. My mouth felt like a cotton ball had exploded inside of it and left tiny tendrils of cotton that were struggling to weave themselves together to form a sheet of fabric near the back of my throat. No matter how much I tried to clear it, that feeling just wouldn’t go away. It felt like, if I didn’t do something about it soon, I’d choke to death. I had high hopes that coffee would help the situation.

His words causes my throat to dry. I feel like crying for some reason. “Get out.” I close my eyes and say. “What?” He asks in confusion. “I said GET THE HELL OUT!” I yell so loud that my throat pains me.

I swallow hard, but the food feels stuck…no, it's like I swallowed sand. I try to breathe, but the air catches. My eyes water. The bowl drops from my hand, clattering against the floor. The sound echoes in the still room. I hear Kael's hurried footsteps. He’s off the stairs in seconds, his boots thudding against the floor. “What’s wrong?” His voice cuts through my gasps. I can’t answer. Something is choking me, there's a raw unbearable pain in my chest—then I feel something huge block my throat, I try to cough it out, hard enough that my ribs ache. I reach for the cup Kael brought in earlier, but my hands are trembling.

Everything was going on smoothly until a chunk of baguette got stuck in my throat and I tried as much as possible to bring it out to no avail. I cleared my throat various times just to get rid of the lodged chunk in my windpipe. My throat was beginning to hurt from the pain of swallowing. I grabbed the glass of juice in front of me to wash it down, but it only worsened the situation. “Z-zayn,” I called him, but he ignored me like I didn't even exist. I tapped on his side of the table, yet he refused to answer. “Zayn!” I yelled out in frustration.

Allysia glanced toward me from where she stood, a smile tucked at the corner of her lips in mockery. Suddenly, my throat felt like it was closing up. It was the type of suffocating knot that makes it impossible to speak without your voice cracking. I dug my nails into the palms of my hands, using the sting to anchor myself. My throat burned with the effort of holding back a sob, a weight that made every swallow feel like war. I kept my chin high and my eyes wide, so the moisture would evaporate before it could form a single drop but I couldn’t take it anymore.

Anything. My throat locked tight. I pushed air up from my lungs, trying to force it past my vocal cords. Nothing came out. I tried again. My jaw trembled. I stared at my own desperate, tear-streaked face and tried to force a sound, but the silence remained absolute. I couldn't do it.

In his temples, where pressure built like storm clouds gathering. He tried to speak. Tried to push words past the wreckage in his throat. Anything. That's not possible. You must be mistaken. There should still be time. Not yet. She can't already.... Nothing came. His throat had sealed itself shut—not gradually but all at once, like a door slamming. Vocal cords locked. Tongue gone heavy as lead, pressing against the floor of his mouth. The words piled up behind his teeth, crowding against each other, building pressure like too many people trying to escape through a single exit. The force of them made his jaw ache, made him worry the bone might actually crack from containing them.
