I'm about to address the big cheeses of the whole Texas. It's indeed a special day. I've never felt so good in my entire life, and I couldn't have asked for more. "Thank you... Thank you everyone ...." I gushed in my sleek american accent, waving and blowing kisses at them, until i was able to restore the decorum. "Thanks so much." I resumed, "I appreciate every single person in this hall today, thank y'all for gracing this ceremony. " Admiring the congregation, and the beautiful displays around. Everything just seem perfect!

The booth had a plate that read, 'The Wishing Booth' and another plate that read 'The Wishing Tree' by the tree. People seemed to have written their wishes on cards and hung them on the three. He walked over and glanced through some of the cards. "Um... 'Pass my exam'... 'Get my dream guy'... 'Slim down!', 'Get rich'!' He chuckled after reading a few cards aloud. "Do you want to write your own? Maybe it will come true." "I don't think I have any wishes. I feel like I'm the happiest person on earth, and it would be greedy of me to make any more wishes." She considered it in all seriousness and realized that she did not have any wish.

I looked up in surprise. It was Clarissa. "You're really good at disappearing without a word. You're still the same as when you were ten." I opened my mouth, unsure of what to say, and lowered my head. "Clarissa, I-I don't deserve your kindness." Her warm hand covered the back of mine. "I heard the Ragaan Republic has a lot of rain. “I guess what I’m saying is, I wish you were here to see it. Or maybe I just wish you were here, period. Anyway… yeah. That’s it. Call me back if you want.” Silence. Then the automated voice: End of message. She replayed it again. And again. Each time, she searched for something new, something buried beneath the casual phrasing. Did his pause mean more? Did the quiet laugh under his breath hold an affection he didn’t dare put into words? By the fifth replay, she was dissecting the word wish as if it were a contract clause. He hadn’t said need. He hadn’t said miss. He had said wish. And yet, the fact that he wished at all… was that enough?

He looked so much like a bright kid. “ You don't get to choose who you get to be, do you? Especially with people like us whose only goal in life is to eat three times in a day”, he said, picking his fingers. “ You won't understand, would you? You don't seem like you've ever experienced the gutters”. My heart broke a thousand pieces when I heard that. “ No. I never did”, I said, sounding so down. “ You gotta thank God for being lucky”, he said, and I knew that if anything was going through his mind, it would be a wish to have an easier life.

His consoling made her feel better but she didn't have any reason to live on.

“No peeking.” “Petty.” Sienna simply turned around, walked to the side of a tree branch, and cocked her head to look at the wishes written by others on the red cloth. There was one written in crooked and childlike handwriting, which read: ‘I didn’t do well in my exam this time.
