I can hardly walk in these things. I had a small suitcase packed in with me, which contained the evidence of my world. It had been almost two years and I searched for every possible means to try and return to my world. Visiting every money-extorting fraud to all the rumored witches. They stopped replying. At that point, Maggie's phone rang. She hurriedly clocked out and left work. I took one last look at Zach's file and stood up to go home. In the shower, I pulled off my silk scarf and exposed the ugly, twisted scar on my neck. Morris had caused it. Ten years ago, in the spring, I couldn't reach him. Courtney had disappeared, too. My vision blurred, and I thought for sure I was about to die. I closed my eyes, bracing for the end. "What are you doing? Open your eyes!" Blazewing's voice rang in my ears. Slowly, I opened them. The whole world had changed. "Wh-where are we?"

When she opened her eyes, she took in a sight she could never have imagined. Just beyond the vines and a narrow strip of sand, lapped an azure mass of water such as she had only seen in visions of the One World. Her eyes, accustomed to a world of sand, could hardly comprehend so much water. Farther out on the water rose the spires of d

I stood before it for a moment with my hands at my sides, looking at the dark, worn cover, the spine that had no title, the pages whose edges had a faint luminescence that might have been age or might have been something else entirely.
