He told me the day before that he planned on paying a surprise visit to many facilities to make sure that things were going well. I left the study and went to the nursery to check on the children there. Once I entered a boy named Theo squealed and ran towards me. "Rayne!" he hollered and clung to my legs. I laughed and picked him up then kissed his forehead. "I'm so sorry, Your Majesty," the supervisor apologized to me. She tried to take Theo away, but I assured her that it was fine. "Nothing to worry about, I love this handsome man," I said as I ruffled his hair, causing him to giggle.

Kira’s POV The cafe smelled like burnt espresso and stale alcohol. I walked past the empty front counter and slid into the booth directly across from Theodore. He didn't look up. He was staring at the amber liquid in his glass, looking like a man who had already decided to die. In my past life, Theodore was a Wall Street legend who flew too close to the sun. He made a catastrophic error, lost his clients' money, and became a pariah. But right now, he was still breathing. And I needed a ghost to do my bidding.

“I found out they’ve already been paid. Someone anonymous took care of it. Do you know anything about that?” Theodore’s eyes flickered slightly, but his expression remained calm and collected. He didn’t hesitate. “I paid them,” he said flatly. “I’ve already followed through on the terms. Your brother’s bills are settled. You don’t need to worry about that anymore.” Nadia froze, her heart skipping a beat. He paid them? Her mind raced back to the moment she’d found out about the payment. She had assumed it was some kind of miracle, a stroke of good luck. But now it all made sense. Theodore had been quietly fulfilling the terms of the deal before she even agreed to it.

Theodore snarled at Hayden as he took a step closer. “I never imagined seeing a day like this. Theodore fucking Rein caring for a woman.” Hayden let out wiping the blood with the back of his hand. His hair was dishevelled. Hayden looked taller and bulkier than Theodore and it was startling how Theodore took him down. Or maybe….he let him. I gulped as his dark eyes met mine and with a shuddering breath, I embedded my face in Theodore’s neck, my arms instinctively tightening around his shoulders.
