Monica reached for my hand and I let her take it, her grip surprisingly strong despite how fragile she looked.
"After this," she said, her voice rough with emotion. "After we've both recovered, we should talk. Really talk. About everything. I know you need time but I—I want you to know that I'm here. That we're here."
Every instinct I had screamed to pull away, to build walls, to protect myself from the inevitable disappointment. But looking at Monica's face, at the desperate hope written across her features, I couldn't bring myself to refuse.
