“You need to—” The windows around us suddenly explode, cutting off the rest of his words. The crash is so deafening. However, something else is happening right now. Black smoky shadows are pouring through the window openings, oo thick and so black. The sight is chilling. And just one sniff tells me everything. Darkness. This is the darkness of forbidden, dark magic. The shadows are spreading across the ballroom like water, climbing the walls and even swallowing some of the lights of the chandeliers. People are screaming outside. Guards are drawing their weapons.

My eyes got heavy and tired, and little by little I was starting to drift off. I didn't know how much time had passed, maybe an hour, give-or-take, when I felt a sharp pain on my feet. I woke up walking to the bedroom door stepping on broken shards of glass spread across the floor in the process. I panicked. My body was moving without my consent. Worse, I wanted to move my fingers, hands, lips, arms, anything but could do nothing. The lamp was off, leaving the room in total darkness. Xander had probably turned it off when I drifted off to sleep.

The cube wanted out. Bullets stopped. Silence fell, thick and unnatural. Then footsteps echoed. The woman stepped into the half-light, flanked by two operatives in matte-black armor.
