Elara froze, her eyes widening in shock. She gave a sharp, quick nod.

Tears welled in Elara’s eyes. She glanced toward the main building, fear etched on her face. Then, with lightning speed, she pulled a folded scrap of paper from her sleeve and pressed it into Tess’s hand before gathering the empty lunch tray and scurrying out.
