Hunger gnawed at me, and I dug in quickly. But midway through my meal, I noticed something. Tobias wasn’t eating. He was just watching me. I stopped, my fork halfway to my mouth. “What?” I asked. He shook his head. “Nothing.” I followed his gaze to his plate. The food was barely touched. His jaw was tight. His eyes clouded with something I couldn’t name. A shadow passed over his face. When he finally took a few bites, he was quick to put his fork down again. “Let’s go.”

I only have seventy-five dollars today; I will try to bring more in the future. Servers come and go, and I don’t remember most of them, as I often eat out. But Lola is different and deserves respect. I find the owner Tobias, to complain for her sake, not the diners. He’s always at his desk, if not on the floor. I step into the office, and his dark curly head pops up. His face shows only delight making his hazel eyes shine when he sees me. Tobias stands and makes his way around the room. Dressed in a checkered bowling shirt and jeans, he is handsome for being so casual.

“Come back after you’ve freshened up. I’ll prepare a meal.” Tobias nodded, grateful for the invitation. “Thanks, Mirabella,” he said sincerely. Then he turned to Hunter. “Boss, I’m not far if you need me.” He crouched a little to Rena’s level. “Hey, princess, see you later, okay?” “Bye, Uncle T!” Rena said with a cheerful wave. “Oh, I like uncle T." Tobias chuckled and headed for the door, leaving the three of them in the quiet house. The door clicked shut, and Mirabella said, “You know, I still don’t get how you people go to new places and somehow make it look like you own everything.” She turned and noticed his eyes on her, “what?"

“What can I say? The man has a type.” “What the bloody hell is that supposed to mean?” I heard dad growl from across the room. “Well, you know they were a thing back in the day,” Tobias said. “The guy has a thing for…extremely, and I mean extremely powerful women. There are only two that he knows of in this world.” He looked at me, “Your mom…and you. Mind you, I believe that if he could he would take you both and just…” he grimaced and shivered in repulsion.

’ ‘Oh, give it a rest,’ I reply internally, even though she’s not wrong. After we finish eating, I stay at the table chatting with Zach and the guys while Tobias and his team stand to leave. “We need to mingle for a bit. We’ll catch you later,” Tobias says, flashing me a small smile before walking away. I watch him go, Zanthe practically wolf-whistling in my mind as his retreating form commands attention. ‘Look at that ass! It’s right at eye level.’ ‘For the love of the Goddess, calm down,’ I mutter inwardly. But she’s right. Tobias is stupidly hot, the kind of hot that makes you question your life choices.

Kyle answers nonchalantly. “So, are you a hybrid as well?” I direct my question back to him, ignoring his snide remark. “I wouldn’t be that unlucky, sweetheart. I am one-third human, one-third Leviathan, and rounding up the perfection, one-hundred percent charming,” Tobias responds with a wink.

The clinking of silver forks and knives against porcelain plates was the only sound filling the main dining room of the Watson estate. Dinner that evening felt painfully stiff and cold. At the head of the table, Mr. Watson sat with his chest puffed out, while Anthony stared down at his food as though it were poisoned. But that night, one additional seat was occupied. Tobias. He had returned to Eastbourne after hearing the shocking news of Bastian’s arrest that had spread throughout the entire city.
