Hell is empty, and the devils are here. Elena stared at the ravaged landscape, the words echoing hollowly in her mind. "So, this is how it ends," she could help but whisper as she stared at her surroundings. The once-clear blue sky was now a violent tapestry of crimson and obsidian. Lush meadows were replaced by a macabre tapestry of scorched earth and countless corpses, a charnel ground fit for the damned. Buildings, the pride of a thousand-year reign, crumbled like sandcastles under an unseen assault.

There I was once again in a dark room, listening to the fight going on outside. I cover my ears, willing myself to close it out. To be anywhere but here again. It had been a few years since I had been locked in my own mind. Everywhere I turned was a new memory, a new trauma. I remember as a child, everyone would talk about hell. How it’s a place bad people where sent. A place far away from earth, a place you could only be sent to by god. But as I grew, I came to learn, hell wasn’t a mythical place. Hell was right here, it lived among us. It lived right under our noses, it lived in the darkest places of the human mind. The places we wanted to pretend didn’t exist. Hell was man made.

I was doomed. I thrashed like that earthworm. I saw my life flash before my eyes. I could feel the worm in my shirt and it would be muddy and cold and slimy and what if it bit me? Did worms have teeth? What if I died? I didn’t want to die just because Tommy was the worst human in existence.

The cold, wet air hit me like a physical blow. The rain instantly plastered my clothes to my skin, stinging my face. "Don't come back, Emily!" he bellowed after me, his voice echoing over the thunder. "If you do, you'll regret it even more!" The door slammed shut with a final, echoing bang, plunging me into the sudden darkness of the storm-swept night. I stood there for a moment, shivering violently, the shock finally giving way to a tidal wave of raw pain.
