I put on my smile and strode towards him. “Hey, buddy. Do you like that one?” I pointed at the vibrant beacon of emergency services. It's a striking shade of glossy fire-engine red, so bright it practically gleams under the light. This isn't a small, hand-held toy. A foot or more in length and proportionally wide and tall. Chen nodded with excitement in his eyes. So, we ended up buying only one toy truck because, according to him, he only needed one.

Instead, I leaned my head back against the seat and closed my eyes. I still didn't understand where he was going with all this. But I was indeed thankful that he got me out of that humiliating situation. The drive was quiet, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. There was something steady about Jesse. Like even in the middle of a storm, he wouldn’t waver.

Brianna’s POV After going to the police station, I went straight to the mall to buy something. I went inside a toy store and chose an average size. I’d like to pick the biggest but Essy might not be able to carry it. “Is it for your daughter, ma’am?” I just smiled at her because I saw a toy car. I grabbed it and checked it. For Brent, I guess? I noticed a toy pick up truck and I smiled unconsciously. I remember the day I saw Rogue riding an old pick up truck. He told me the story about the pickup and now I understand why he treasures that car so much.

“That’s Tobey.” As if summoned by his own name, Tobey came running toward them, pushing a toy truck overflowing with grass, sand, leaves, and several unidentifiable treasures collected with great importance. The wheels refused to turn. He stopped in front of Alicia, brows knitted in deep confusion. “Mommy… It’s broken.” She crouched beside him. “Maybe it’s just tired.” Then she looked up. “Tobey, this is Teddy. An old friend of mine.”

“You can place these on his grave. I hope you have a black dress.” ********* As promised, Tracy had arranged safe and covert transportation for Audrey and Bella. The driver was also given a password for extra security. The car ride was long, tense, silent. Bella always fell asleep while in a car, so Audrey was thankful for her daughter’s peace. When she got older, they would tell her about how craziness her infancy had been. Their world was a mess, and they had done their best to shield her from everything. So far, they’d been successful and she wanted to keep it that way.

I approached him once looking at the stuff toys inside. “This” I whispered and pointed to a small blue stuff toy. He dropped the token and started playing. While the one next to us, I can’t count how many tokens he has already paid. I just laugh at the way they look. I turned to Wayne and he frowned in extreme seriousness. “That! That’s it! —Aaiiiishh ”Ashley complained when the stuff toy fell. I laughed at their looks. “Owwshiiee” My eyes widened when Wayne actually got the stuff toy I was saying.

And to be able to do that, I should spend the day with him and without making him notice that I was watching him. With that, I nodded and forced a smile. He smiled woefully, gently grabbed my hand, and carefully pulled me to the theme he wanted to try first. And as the day got longer, I forgot about the plan. The first theme that we tried was the Toy Story Land, where we met the mascot for Woody and a T-rex mascot. He was so childish in a playful way and took a lot of pictures, some were the usual pose while most were his made face that made me laugh hard.

“I just… It’s so nice. It’s too nice. I don’t belong in a truck this nice.” When I went to take a step back, Isobel caught my arm. “Shaw,” she warned, arching her eyebrows threateningly. “Don’t you dare wig out. It’s just a truck.” “Ju…just a truck?” I exploded. Just a truck. Right. And Porter Hall Estate was just a house. “It’s a brand spanking new Super Duty F-450 Platinum. That’s what it is! It’s like the boss of badass trucks. Do you know how much this thing had to cost? Holy fuck, Isobel. What if I wreck it, or dent it, or get a freaking scratch on it?” I was afraid to even touch it, much less drive it.

Tracy and Tokodi left soon after the brief conversation with the parents. Tokodi often visited his family who still lived here so he went round showing Tracy all the old spots that had been transformed. Tokodi was driving Tracy’s car and he drove slowly and carefully as the old neighbourhood had poorly maintained roads. Tokodi managed to make Tracy laugh as he reminded her of various escapades they had done in their childhood days. By the time they were driving into the highway, Tracy was in a very pleasant mood.

He paused, letting the silence stretch between us. “It was a power bike.” Tobias whispered, his eyes locked onto mine. “The same model as yours, and the exact same custom license plate. Now, why would the captain of the Kensington hockey team be lurking around our rival school at night?
