They are arguing amongst themselves trying to come to a conclusion on where we were going when I finally veered off the highway. "T, o, y, that's toy. Right, mommy?" Justin asked and I smiled. All that matters is that we're at this city's largest toystore," I revealed and they began screaming excitedly.

“Are these yours?” “Yeah,” he said, leaning against a black Chevy. “Been collecting them for years. This one—” he patted the Chevy, “—was my first. It was a gift from my dad before he passed.” His voice dipped, quieter. “I was sixteen. He taught me to drive in it. He said it would make me a man. I crashed it a week later.” He chuckled, but his eyes held something raw I'd never seen before. There was a crack in his usual steel.

RHONDA Theodore was the most delusional person I had ever had the misery of knowing. She shoved the plushie into my arms and forced me offstage. The cheap plushie in my hands felt rough to the touch, and the price tag hanging on its back still read five dollars. I recalled what was written on the slip earlier and knew I hadn't misread it. I was about to go onstage to explain when thunderous applause broke out across the hall. "Congratulations, Katie Thorpe! You've won first prize this year—a three-day trip to Marosa!"

She darted away before I could argue. Minutes later, she reappeared giggling. "I asked Teddy for something for you, and he gave me his keys and said to look in his console. Do you know which truck is his?" I laughed. "Yeah, come on." We walked over to a truck so covered in mud that it looked like part of the landscape. I pointed to the elevated cab. "It's up to you to brave the climb." Cassy scaled the side with a laugh, disappearing into the truck.

Theo's eyes darted from one display to the next, his imagination sparked by the array of toys, clothes, and treats that lined the aisles. "Mama Hazel, can we go see the toy store?" Theo tugged at her hand, his eyes shining with excitement at the prospect of new treasures to discover. "Of course, Theo! Let's go and find some toys to play with," Mama Hazel replied, her heart warmed by the joy in Theo's eyes. In the toy store, Theo's laughter filled the air as he explored the shelves filled with colorful playthings. He picked up a toy car, a stuffed animal, and a set of building blocks, each item sparking his imagination and filling his heart with delight.

My skin crawled with unease as he closed the distance between us. “Please… I’m begging you. I didn’t do anything wrong. I was just born into this world by inconsiderate parents.” My voice cracked as tears streamed down my face. My eyes stayed on the gun by his side. What if he pulled the trigger by mistake? I grab my phone and start typing out an email, which I will never send. "My little Clayton Jr. Today daddy went out in this big mean old truck.
