The message arrived on a Tuesday, which Adaeze would later think was almost insulting in its ordinariness. Tuesdays were not supposed to be the day your life cracked open a second time. Tuesdays were for school runs and supplier calls and the small unremarkable business of living. She had come to trust Tuesdays, in the months since everything had broken and begun, however unsteadily, to mend.

He traced a lazy map on my back with the tip of his finger and then stopped, his thumb brushing mine until my skin hummed. “Claire,” he said, the name steady. “Do you want anything? Out of the ordinary. No apartments or boardrooms — nonsense. I mean it.” “You tell me,” I said, because asking him was both cruelty and balm. I liked being wanted to that extent. “I want Tuesdays,” he said promptly. “Every week. A day we keep for ourselves. No news, no work. Just us cooking bad food, reading terrible novels, making ridiculous plans.” I laughed. “Tuesdays sound like the kind of small, ridiculous thing I will absolutely hoard.”

He came back on a Tuesday in the second week of November, which felt appropriate. Significant things in this story tended to arrive on Tuesdays. Mrs Jane was not in her usual sitting place by the window close to the big flower pot sipping coffee. I scratched the back of my head and walked towards the kitchen. “Mrs Jane,” I called out as my eyes fluttered around the kitchen, it was empty. Is she not home yet? I thought to myself and walked out of the kitchen, I glanced down at my wristwatch, it was past eight in the evening and Mrs Jane always arrives home before seven in the evening which made me think of what Lukas said. He had received a text message from his mother and left earlier, is his mother okay?

She was looking out the window with her chin on her palm. “Chloe.” “Yeah.” “What are you going to eat Tuesdays.” “Eggs.” “Eggs aren’t—” “Eggs aren’t meat, Dad.” “No, but—” “Eggs are vegetarian. I looked it up.”

On Tuesday afternoons, the upper floor consultation suite was occupied by appointment — and on Tuesday afternoons, the staff had learned to arrange themselves quietly around a particular presence without being asked to. Cassian had known about the Tuesday appointments since the previous week. He had written it in his notebook when he got home. Chanel. Tuesday. 3PM. Underlined. He had looked at it every day since and thought about the logistics, which were honestly not that complicated if you just committed to the plan properly.
