They didn’t seem afraid, nor did they look intimidated. Tyler backed slowly towards the door, but he didn’t make any attempt to escape. His back hit the door as he pushed it closed slowly. Once he was sure the door was locked, he lowered his sword from his shoulder. He saw two more out there and they charged at him. One of the men shifted and threw a knife at Tyler. He blocked the knife with a small shield, and the next one slashed at Tyler with a large blade. Tyler dodged the slash, jumping backwards, but tripped and fell over. The second man kicked his legs apart and pinned his arms behind him. Tyler struggled frantically to move his limbs, kicking and punching furiously.

My focus was on the body moving inside the cell. Tyler. He was waiting. As the two wardens reached the door, Tyler stood straight. He didn’t look like a man; he looked like a predator cornered, his eyes fixed on the gap in the steel. One of the wardens fumbled with the giant padlock, the metal clanking loudly in the silence. The moment the door swung open, Tyler didn’t hesitate. He lunged. He was a blur of gray and rage, his fangs bared, aiming straight for my throat.

The east wing is quieter. Darker. The hallway is lined with photographs in expensive frames—all black and white. I pause to look at them. A young Tyler, maybe seven or eight, holding a baby in his arms. Bella, I realize. Even then, he looked fierce. Protective. Tyler as a teenager, standing over what looks like his first kill—a massive elk. Blood on his hands. Pride in his eyes. Tyler in a suit, younger but no less dangerous, shaking hands with men who look like they run countries.

I couldn't help but ask. “Hockey.” He gestured toward the arena. “Titanfall’s playing tonight.” The blonde looped her arm through his, her eyes widening in a glossy, predatory sort of interest. “Oh,” she said brightly. “This is Lily?” An unpleasant chill coiled tightly in my stomach. Tyler noticed. He always noticed anything asides my happiness. His grin sharpened. “Yeah,” he said. “My ex.” Wonderful. Exactly the title I wanted. His girlfriend tilted her head. “The Lily?”
