My heart felt like it had stopped when Marianna appeared in my line of vision. Zara’s small trunk sat open on her bed. She didn't have much—a few sets of her best cotton suits, her father’s old silver watch that didn't work, and a stack of law textbooks she had memorized until the pages were thin. "You must promise me one thing, Zara," Maryam said, standing in the doorway. The shadows made her look older, frailer. Zara paused, a folded shawl in her hands. "Anything, Ma."

Martha let out softly. “Can you believe we have twenty two of them?” The shock could be found in my gaze at her utterance, with eyes shifting between the two figures before me. “Our marriage was filled with ten blessings. All strong beautiful kids” She called out. “It gladdens me coming to behold a young couple who seem to be so happy” I couldn’t tell if her words were a means of mocking us, but I knew so well, Cameron and I were far from being happy at the moment.

"Maryam was twenty years old, quiet and pretty. Her husband Mallam was a lot older than her, she was his third wife and she was a very good wife to him, he loved her. Maryam caught the eye of her brother in law, Mallam's younger brother who persistently tried to indulge her in an illicit affair with him, she told Mallam but he didn't believe her. One day, Maryam was in her house alone and Mallam's younger brother came in and raped her, she cried and told Mallam but he didn't want to listen, he felt she was lying.
