hummed in her chest. “No” trembled in her head. But her feet answered for her, moving before she could talk herself out of it. They walked behind the shed toward the quiet path that led to the row of old oak trees. The sounds of volunteers softened behind them until there was nothing but the rustle of leaves and the crunch of gravel under their steps. They stopped beneath the largest oak, the one that towered over the rest like a guardian. Jaxon shoved his hands in his pockets the same habit he had when he was nervous, though he’d never admit it.

So Owen could have fruit by autumn, he brought in workers to replant the tree and bought butterflies to set loose in the garden. One afternoon, I sat leaning against the trunk of the new apple tree, soaking in the sun. A breeze came through, and white petals drifted down around me. Soft and weightless, they settled on my skin. The butterflies circled me, one landing on my shoulder as if asking me to come play. I didn't have the strength to turn my head. Owen tried everything. He even brought in priests to pray over me, to sing and beg the Moon Goddess for mercy. Every single one of them looked at me and shook their head.

My body stopped growing colder by the day. One morning a month later I went with Leon to break ground in a clearing in the hills behind town. When I looked down at the bond mark over my heart, the one that had withered black, a familiar tingling ran through my chest. At the center of the dead mark, a point of green had broken through the dead skin, and a fine young oak shoot had come out of it. "Leon." I touched the shoot, and the tears came at once. "It's alive."

But I just shrug it off. “Daddy, what’s that huge tree?” Andre voice draws Carlton’s Attention from me. All eyes trails where he’s pointing at and there’s gigantic tree at a far end of the forest. Even as we are standing up on a wooden bridge it’s still so tall and has its branch sprouting out everywhere. The tree is so magnificent and would really get anyone bedazzled. The oak tree. “That’s the oak tree.” Carlton says and someone squeals beside Andre. Griffin. Then with his eyes widen in amazement he exclaims, “The royal tree of the forest!”

They hated everyone who was associated with my father; they made sure to get rid of them. A few minutes into my walk, my eyes suddenly caught something under the apple tree in the orchard, the one Luna Jane would normally spend all her days under. I thought I thought it was an animal, a fox, or even a bear, but the moonlight made my wolf sight sharper in the dark. I saw a dark figure, looking like a man, but when I moved closer, I saw that two people were standing under this tree.

Rowan said, pointing through the trees. Kael rested his hand on the hilt of his sword. "We stay together." Nobody argued. We followed the sound. The forest changed as we walked. The pines gave way to older trees. Their branches spread so wide that the sunlight barely reached the ground. The air smelled of wildflowers. Then... I saw it. An oak tree. Its trunk split into two before reaching the branches. The same tree from my mother's drawing. "The orchard," Elias whispered. No one moved.

“Do you want to see the oak tree? It is where most of them live too.” Rosalyn blinked. “What’s an oak tree?” I lowered my voice slightly like I was about to tell her the world’s greatest secret. “It’s a magic tree.” Her eyes widened instantly. “It is?” I nodded seriously. “It holds all the secrets in the world. Everyone tells it their secret, and it has seen so many generations and so many people, and it knows everything that is there to know.” Rosalyn gasped softly. “No way…” “And,” I added, glancing briefly at Mia before looking back at our daughter, “it’s your turn to tell the tree one of your secrets too.”

She couldn’t keep our promise. “Luna, you’re breaking my heart” I shouted before falling to my knees. I looked up at the sky and I was surrounded by thousands of evergreen trees, and they kept all the secrets of Madison, the little town in which they circled around.

Oscar leaned on the oak tree that stood on the ground full of shrubs and wild mushrooms talking with Blaire as they both smiled at each other. "This is it," Oscar said. "This is where we first met, the day you were supposed to meet up with Dax." The memories of this very place haunted Blaire. She tried to push it off the more it became more evident to her that she had made a lot of silly mistakes in the past. "Yes, I do remember vividly," Blaire said. "It was a beautiful night, just like this one." She lied trying to hide her turbulence. Blaire and Osacar both sat down under the oak tree listening to the rushing sounds of the waterfall. The sun was setting hard, and the sky was getting darke

I doubled down by crying out, “Would he give you a happy pat on the back if you allow something to happen to his unborn pups due to too much heat?” “No please, go on please. But at least let me escort you to make sure you're safe.” He offered. I bent over and cried out again, adding some convulsive shakes to the drama. “Ah, please just go quickly!” He conceded. I smiled out of the corner of my mouth as I left him. Fool. It wasn't such a long walk before I saw the oak tree described by the note-sender. I couldn't see anyone there. I went closer till I got to the tree itself. I stood there, looking around.
