Gaia scurried down the alleyway near her apartment building, hoping to cut a few minutes off her commute home. Gaia rarely enjoyed going this way at night. The streetlights cast an eerie glow against the line of garage doors which gave her an unsettled feeling in the pit of her stomach. It didn't help that she'd been having odd dreams for several months, and sometimes, they seemed so real, she wasn’t sure she was actually dreaming.

Neither one of them being able to get enough as they repeated the words like a mantra, feeling like everything was a dream and both of them terrified of waking up and finding this to be nothing but a fiction of their imagination. "I love you." "I love you." "I love you."

She decided to stop at the coffee shop and ordered two mocha frappes just the way she liked it: extra espresso and no whip cream; one for herself and one for her best friend. The slow drive up to the window gave her mind time to wander. She thought about the last few nights. Her dreams had been wild. She recalled one in particular that played in her dreams a few times over the last two years; three owls. They flew to her, resting on her arms and shoulder. She could recall it was all immensely powerful. They sat on her until she was ready to move, and once she started to walk down the dirt path barefoot, the owls followed her on the journey, one always leading the way.

The nights are the worst. Sometimes I dream in flashes, light, static, whispers of a name that never fully reaches me. In those dreams, I’m surrounded by fragments of code, melting away like snow in sunlight. I always reach out for someone’s hand, but wake up just before I touch it. My chest races, my fingers tremble. I tell myself it’s just a dream, but deep down, I know it’s something else.
