She found the oversized reading chair near the window and curled into it, flipping open the first book. The words leapt off the page. “To drink the blood of a mortal is to tether them. To drink the blood of a wolf is to invite war. Vampires, once gods of the night, now bound to laws born of blood and shadow…” Her heart beat faster. The text described things in such vivid detail—the hierarchy of vampire covens, the venom in their fangs, the way their eyes glowed during feeding, their immortal thirst, and their deadly aversion to sunlight and silver.

No wonder some people get addicted to it. The memory of what happened last night makes me shudder, and I try not to think of those men's threats. Now I just want to enjoy being alone for the first time in a while, so I go down to the library and search for something to read. There's an entire shelf dedicated to novels about vampires, which is amusing to find inside a vampire's library, so I pick one called Carmilla and settle down in an armchair. I'm ten pages into it when the door opens abruptly.

She shrugged, a little awkwardly. I smiled back, wanting to put her at ease. “Thank you, Sie. I really appreciate it.” We flicked through some new books and papers while we waited for the pizza to arrive. They were all much the same – long, winding documentation of vampire sightings from the Victorian era, many of which were clearly allegories for something else, like impudent women or the fear of industrialisation.

Memories flooded back to her as she read about her father's struggles with being a vampire, his innermost thoughts and feelings about their kind and their place in the world. she began to realize that there was more to the journal than just her father's personal musings. There were mentions of a group of vampires who believed that their kind should rule over humans, and who were willing to do whatever it took to achieve their goals. Celess felt a sinking feeling in her stomach as she read on. She had heard whispers of this group before - they called themselves the "Purebloods," and they were notorious for their extreme views and violent tactics. She turned to The Shadow, her voice trembling.

The people at the inn will notice that something is wrong. I understood what it meant when I saw Ryson drinking blood from that maid. Feeding on humans. On weak people. I had read too many books, watched too many movies, heard too many stories about myths and legends, liked fiction very much. Where humans and vampires didn't get along. Then, Dante appeared as if in a smoke and threw something to the women that made them act like scavenger birds fighting for the morsels of food thrown at them. Jon placed a hand on his neck and tried to feel for wounds under his jaw. His felt no wounds, nor were there traces of blood on his hands. He recalled that the women took turns to suck his blood, like from some gothic novel or horror movie. Perhaps he dreamed that too? Everything seemed fantastical and he knew that he would be disbelieved, even laughed at, if he recounted what he thought he had just experienced.
